I was on I-10 in Baton Rouge, LA the other day doing the speed limit, plenty of space between me and the car ahead, just enjoying a CD. A small car swerved in front of me and, just when she did, the car in front of her (the one that had been directly in front of me) slammed on its brakes. I had very little room between me and the woman in front of me--I saw what was happening a little before she did and hit my brakes. Bottom line, when she hit her brakes there was about 20-30 feet between us. My big 7000+ truck was stopping as fast as that little car was!! Man do these things have brakes! I thought sure I'd just go right into her rear end, but the gap betwen us barely closed. Also, I experienced no loss of control and, I guess because of the ABS, no tire sqealing like I had experienced in past vehicles. I thought I'd be all over the interstate, but my big 3500 stayed in a straight line. Kudos for those 4 big discs! My baby is still in one piece and that means more to me than beating a Ford or Chevy in a drag race.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I was able to stop as well as the car in front of me. It was on I-540 in NW Arkansas. During and after the stop I looked in my rear view. About sh** my pants. There was an 18 wheeler quite a ways behind me. He must have been loaded VERY heavy. After closing a 200' gap he still had to be doing 60mph when he almost hit me. Nothing but tire smoke behind him. He was in my lane and his trailer was beside him in the other lane.

Thank God for the BOMBs. They saved my *** when I had about a second and a half to get out of the way through the median. :D

That sounds similar to an insurance fraud scam called the "swoop and squat". There are a few variations, i. e. number of cars, method of attack, etc. but it's the same basic method. You can read about it here:

http://www.ksinsurance.org/consumers/fraud/fraud.htm

Swoop & Squat -- This scam occurs when the vehicle you are following is suddenly passed by another vehicle that "swoops" in front of it. This causes the vehicle in front of you to stop abruptly, or "squat. " As a result, you are unable to avoid colliding with the rear end of the vehicle. The drivers of both the swoop and squat car planned the accident. The swoop car will never be seen again and the driver of the squat car plans to submit vehicle damage and personal injury claims to your insurer. Oftentimes, multiple occupants in the squat car will fabricate bodily injuries as well.

Glad everything worked out. The brakes on these 3rd gen trucks are supurb!! They were the first thing I noticed when I picked up mine. They have 17in wheels to clear the bigger brakes. So Ive been told.

I got rear-ended on 540 a couple vehicles ago, my Mustang GT stopped alot faster than the klunker behind me with one working brake. Still haven't figured out why so many folks feel the need to panic stop for no apparent reason out there.

Who does your work here in NWArk?

Chad

I didn't realize there was anybody else from NWArk on here. :) Seems like most of those panic stops happen southbound between Bentonville and Springdale between 4:30 and 6:00.

I have Tracy at Lewis take care of warranty issues. He seems in the know and I haven't had any issues. For non-warranty work, I try to do what I can myself so I know it's done right. For BOMBs that I can't handle I've been working with John up at Floor-It Diesel in Lawrence, KS. He's sharp and not *too* far away. He installed a SouthBend Dual Disc clutch in my truck a couple weeks ago.

What part of NWArk are you from anyhow?

I missed a lady by about 1" who ran a stop sign in front of me on the way to church. My 3500 stpped straight, sure, and quietly , no tire squeal. She never even saw the 7000 pound truck an inch from her passenger door inn the middle of the intersection. Talk about God sending angels to protect you!

I never cared for working on vehicles in the past, but I've enjoyed working on this one so far.

I live just outside Fayetteville to the west. You?

About time for all us NW Arkansas CTD owners to get together. Maybe at the Catfish Hole. I'm west of Fayetteville too. South of Tontitown about 4 miles off wheeler road.

Sounds like we're all within about 20 miles of each other. I'm just south of West Fork. Is there a way to find out how many other people are in the area on here?

Who said anything about that? What about the hundreds that die everyday in that same scenario? Who was (or better yet, wasn't) watching over them? I know, I know, guess it was "their time to go".

Try this: Stop looking before you pull out into heavy traffic and see how long before your angel takes a nap and lets you get hit.
