Well guys, I'm gonna go look at another CTD today. It's a 89 W350 SRW 4x4 with a Western plow. Only thing I'm not too big on is the auto transmission, but oh well. Asking $5000 obo. Some day I'm gonna have the market cornered on these 1st Gens. #ad

I wouldn't get a auto if possible. most of the problems on this site are automatic relevant, i. e. cooling, shifting, life, exh. brake, etc.

the only problem is that most used truck seem to be at.

I bought mine and the only reservation was the transmission.

sure ,if I can spare an extra 4000. 00 I can correct it and in the process make the truck cost way more than it,s worth but as I said ,when shopping used you can't get everything you want and the rest of this truck was excellent.

Well guys... I checked it out today and was a little surprised by the 3 spd auto. Not used to them. Shifted really good and seemed mechanically sound. A few little things didn't work like the power mirrors and locks. The plow may need some minor work. I probably won't be bringing this one home, but you never know.

My '92 truck has the 4-spd auto, and I'm quite happy with it overall. If I was doing serious towing of over 10,000 pounds, that might be a different story. If the transmission has received regular maintenance, in my opinion it should last at least 150k. Mine has 145k, so I'm running Amsoil synthetic ATF and keeping my fingers crossed, but so far it's fine. The only problem mine has is with torque converter drainback in the morning, but a few seconds of fast idling in neutral cures that.

Assuming the truck is a Wisconsin native, I'd be looking close at the body & frame rust situation, especially that frame rail adjacent to the fuel tank. That's a nasty spot for salt to collect, and I have to keep flushing the frame on mine in the winter to keep it rust-free.

Best wishes.

That's a 727 trans isn't it? That's a tough unit. I could be wrong, but I think most of the problems are with the later overdrive transmissions. A 727 would be a lot cheaper to fix in the long run, too. One disadvantage is top speed is probably lower without the o/d...

I agree... . the basic 727 is a very good/reliable transmission if well maintained.

It is a good race transmission too.

The OD on the later model (A518) was the week spot. Still, it can be improved on with a transmission job. If you don't want to do that, get a good shop to do a thorough service, pressure adjustments etc.
