Mbrp Exhaust...man Im ****** Off

Well today as i was going over bumps i heard my exhaust hitting something. So i go under the truck and there STAINLESS STEEL exhaust system has SPOTS OF RUST ALONG THE WHOLE EXHAUST SYSTEM... So what kind of crap is this? Is it normal to see any specs of rust on a SS exhaust or what?

if it is the 409 series stainless, it will get rust spots on it. Only 304 ss will not rust. 409 series ss can handle heating and cooling cycles better than 304 ss and its cheaper

Is there anyway i will be able to get the rust off or will it be there forever?

it will do it again



I wouldnt worry about it

it should stay surface rust for a long time



just keep the road salt washed off

They have a several step process that works and it comes in many colors and maybe even clear now. I use it on my motorcycle because I ride all year round. Looks good and its paintable.

Sorry to hear about this. Remember that stainless comes in many varying grades, and strength/corrosion resistance is different for each. Generally, more strength = less corrosion resistance. Also, the more corrosion-resistant alloys are usually more expensive (I think). I can vouch for POR-15, but I'm not sure what it's temperature limits are.

Rusty T-409

Unfortunately that is the nature of T-409, it will "brown out" after just a few months use depending on where you live and the enviroment you live in. We sell a lot of T-409 as the cost of it vs T-304 is MUCH less, but it will corrode and get a gray brown color like a factory stainless system will. T-304 will get dirty over the winter but if you get a pail of hot soapy water in the spring with a sponge it comes back almost new looking year after year.



That's why we have aluminized, T-409 and T-304 systems to meet any customers needs based on where they live and the length of time the intend to own the truck.

Well i do live in chicago. There is so much salt its sick. Im not happy that my stainless steel exhaust is looking like crap IMO. Already after spending 500 dollars on a system.

$500 is pretty cheap. An aluminized system will not show the rust you have though. The aluminum coating works very well in your environment.

500 is pretty cheap for a ss exhaust. But the company does say it is stainless steel exhaust. Im wondering if it even is ss... ANyone know how i can check? I can look at stock here at work thats ss. . But mbrp but the mirror finish on the exhaust so i cant tell...

It's stainless. the one I got was 409, so I'm sure yours is the same.

Another thing that causes stainless steel to rust is having it come into contact with standard steel material. When I worked at Pittsburgh Steel's fabricating facility in Des Moines we had to put all the stainless on wood blocks. It was not allowed to set directly on the fitting floor (steel). When welding or fitting it was always protected from any non stainless steel.



I wonder if the bending process can cause this phenomenon because of the jaws and clamps in the mandrel benders. I guess if it's polished up that pretty much eliminates that theory.

Yeah. . it seems the last hanger wasnt in right and fell out . . i knew the exhaust looked werid when at idle it was moving around about 2 inches... . I pulled it in at work and fixed it... only problem now is that IMO the exhaust looks like its too far away from the body... Theres a 2-1/2 inch gap between the tip and the bottom of the body. . Any way i can fix this?

Undo the last clamp and hope it didn't crimp the metal too much and you can rotate the pipe in that joint so it's closer to the body. Mine sits nice and close.



Also, went and looked and mine has quite a few rust spots in some areas. Hard to tell with all the sand and salt that seems to have just stuck to the exhaust. It's just surface though and it mostly came off with my fingernail.

409 ss IS MAGNETIC (more iron content)

304 ss IS NOT MAGNETIC (more chromium, nickel content)



409 WILL get rust spots but will last a heck of a lot longer than any thing with ALUMINUM on it in OUR environment (road salt)



dont waist your time polishing anything made of 409 ss in our area. It will not stay that way



no different than running polished aluminum in our area, we all know what that looks like after a long winter of salt covered roads



If you want everything to stay polished and look like a show truck in our area, you might as well keep it in the shed in the winter, Or make everything out of food grade stainless (300 series)
