Another 03 PTO question

I have the Banks monster exhaust system on my 03 H. O and like it except for an awful annoying drone around 2100-2200 rpm.

I talked to a local shop today who sells MBRP systems and says this muffler would simply replace my Banks muffler and would be much quieter and would eliminate the drone.

I don't have any knowledge or experience with this brand. Does anyone have one or know if it will perform as described?

Thanks

I have ridden in my friends' 05 and the MBRP system he has sounds great at all times. He has a reg. cab which tends to minimalize drone though. Hope this helps.

I just put the MBRP on my 05 last weekend. It sounds great, not too loud with the cat still in place. I havn't towed with it yet, but hooking up the 5vr & heading to the coast tomarrow. I had the banks monster exhaust on my 01 & it did have a drone when towing over the mountains.

Just installed their "cool duals" on mine yesterday. Sounds awesome at all levels. Really quiet for a performance system at cruising speeds. It's "cat back" so I'm sure the cat muffles it a little also.

Drone is cause by many contributing factors,Boost,Turbo,Volume, travel, etc. I had no drone with stock turbo, when I upgraded to the SPS62 the drone dramatically increased. I am thinking of installing a wave tube to eliminate it. The problem is placement and size.

I am stock except the exhaust and on the intake side I have the AFE system with the metal tube(forgot the name) and I removed my silencer ring.

I think I am going to go back to stock on all of the intake and replace the ring, sound just gets annoying and I think the stock airbox flows plenty of air without any fueling boxes.

I also have an 03 with a MBRP exhaust. I didn't have the drone until I installed the exhaust. My first upgrade was AFE and only heard an increase in turbo whine. The second mod was an Edge EZ and heard a slight increase in injector noise. My third upgrade was the exhaust and that is when I started getting the drone. I don't mind it though.

Or you can buy just the MBRP muffler and place it in with your current Banks exhaust... Why buy 4" tubing again if you already have it (unless its rusting away). Putting just the muffler inline with the current set-up will take the drone out and save you from having to buy an entire new system. Im running 2 mufflers, one of them being the MBRP and the other a Magnaflow, absolutly NO drone or excessive noise pulling heavy loads. I replaced my cat with the Magnaflow to free up some exhaust and lower my EGTs. Under WOT it still sounds excellent but at cruising speeds and pulling loads, youd swear my exhaust is bone stock from the interior. 2 mufflers arent as restrictive as it sounds as long as they are both a "straight through" design. HTH

That would be my plan, just swap out the mufflers and keep the existing Banks pipe.

I'm hoping this muffler will eliminate the drone.

I have a 03 with a Bank monster Exhaust ... I added a aeroturbin at the time I installed the system. The aeroturbin hookes up after the bend of the down pipe.

I also put a 5" tip that has perferation in it ... I dont know if it helps with the sound

but it looks cool . As for sound is louder than stock but not much one can have a talk

with people in the back seat and not have to yell

Heck... the ultamit test , my wife does not complain

it is vary civilised.

what is a MBRP ??

Does eney one know what the thing is in front of the muffler in the 06???

I looked at one yesterday and saw this thing(it looks like a aeroturbon)

Is a expanshon chamber or a catolitic converter?? (I cant spell worth a damm)

dward,

I would suggest leaving the Banks muffler in place and adding the MBRP one in line with it to make sure the drone goes away. Drone is a mysteriuos thing, a small population of the trucks have it and others don't???!!!

The Banks seems to be more prone to it than some. For example on the 2004. 5 trucks when customers get our replacement muffler there is no drone, if they drop the cat approx 5% get some small amount of drone, yet the rest don't at all.

Mark @ DPPI

After 1 year of running a Banks turbo-back exhaust it got a bit loud. Especially from 2000-2200. I wouldn't say it's a drone like a big block Chevy with Flowmasters, but annoying.

I ordered the 30" muffler from DPPI and installed it 10" back from the downpipe flange, also leaving the Banks muffler in place. The new muffler sounds pretty good, and definitely mellowed the system out.

Now at highway speeds from 2000-2200 rpm you can hear the exhaust, but no drone. At all other speeds it's silent, unless you step on it.

I'm happy with it so far, I think it's a good solution.

Drone is a subjective thing. Some people say a loud exhaust alone has "drone," but IMO drone is when the exhaust note reverberates between your ears and blocks out most other sound. I used to have that kind of drone in my 5. 0 Mustang years back, and my buddy did too in his Camaro w/ a big block and Flows that dumped aft of the axle.

I'd bet those that complain of drone with the MBRP system are just more sensitive to noise.

I was saying to do what Mark was talking about, run both of the mufflers. Not just swap one out for the other. It worked great for me and it seems like it did just as good of a job for JCleary, but good luck with whatever you decide. :)

Thanks for the advice Mark and JRD, I assume it would be installed before the Banks muffler, didn't even think about this. I assume there is enough room.

I agree, I like a deep "throaty" sound, but when the girlfriend puts earplugs in and we can't have a conversation until it gets to about 2500 rpm or better, shifts back into OD, I would rather have the stock system.

I think I'll give this a try.
