Here's a hit and miss engine you can hold in your hand. It was made by the late George Luhrs in Shoreham, LI. Note the dime in the cooling hopper for size reference.

I guess you could call it a toy, it's a running model. The batteries and coil are under the wood base. This was one of his larger models.
