What do you do when the mechanic, your on on a test drive with red-lines your truck?:--) There was a post not to long ago about rpms increasing while accelerating hard after you push the clutch in. Well, this mechanic was not aware of this phenomenon and he shifted at approx. 2900rpm but it kept on going to approx. 3300 - 3500rpm:eek: Is this something I should be concerned about?

no... the engine can not really over rev [by throttling it]. the engine governor will catch it. it isn't going to damage the engine at all. as long as the engine was at operating temprature, i wouldn't worry about it in the least bit... . there are some engine tests that require the engine to be running at the governor. .

I am not 100% here but I think the point were the Cummins starts to come apart is more like 4500 RPM's the 3200 is very conservative. Engineers please add more.

I've been up against the governor a hundred times with mine already. It's OK for me to do it, not the guy test-driving my truck.

Speaking of high RPM I read a Cummins bulletin somewhere about idling a truck in extremely cold weather, something like colder than 20-30 below zero, to operate for X number of minutes at 2800rpm, increase to 3200rpm for X minutes, and finally hold it at 3500rpm for 5 minutes or so. I believe this was for engines that were run too long below operating temp and it was the procedure to follow before shutdown to prevent excessive carbon buildup. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I wouldnt worry about it,if he was banging gears ,and runnign it hard id be concerned, otherwise i wouldnt make an issue of it. He probably did you a favor,by winding her up a bit. I run mine at 3500 often, and mine seems to like it so far.

You might want to dope-slap him for beating on your truck, however.

Dave,

I'm with you! Actually, I've cooled down a bit and I'm glad I didn't blow a gasket when it happened. Now I can focus on getting the truck fixed and not having the guy working on it seeking retribution for rating on him. Thanks guys for the input.

Supplied (repeatedly) by gooch of the diesel stop. Cold weather tsb

I lived at redline man. Its ok. No worries. You can run these babies at 2900 rpm at near max load for thousands of hours. 3200-3500 isnt that much of a step. Redline is your friend.

Ive run it over the redline while decelerating quite a few times. Ive rum my pops idi over the redline too. Aint no thing. Redline is more like a suggestion. I dont even call it the redline anymore. They make kits for the 12v specifically to move the governer up an additional thousand rpm.
