I thought I was having problems w/ my transmission upshifting into 2nd gear (Had to rev it up in 1st and let off to ease it into 2nd) but all along I never had 2nd and I was going from 1st into 3rd.

Is this common or sound right. He recommend I save up for a ATS.

Thats happened to me in two Phords. (a 1980 f100 and a 95 f-250). Both with C6 trannies.

Would rev way up then shift into third. The band for second gear would just fail. First time it got into the linkage. It would drive fine (except for the first to third thing) but I couldn't shift into park because the band was caught in the linkage. I had to get it fixed because in order to get YOUR KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION YOU HAVE TO BE IN PARK

Had to rebuild the tran each time. Save up and get your favorite aftermarket transmision. ;)

This happened on my 2k v-10 - it was a broken strut to the band in the trans - a few dollar part and it was on its way - under warranty at that time believe it can be easily replaced without trans removal...

I'd drop the pan and take a look. Second gear band is near the front of the trans. If you look on the drivers side you can see the stud sticking out for the band adjustment. Follow that inside the case and see if the lever is still intact.

Second gear is just and apply of that band. I don't remember what 3rd gear apply is.

I agree on dropping the pan and look for broken band apply linkage and/or parts. If the pan is full of metallic debris and clutch/band material then a rebuild is in order. But you may get by with a cheap and simple repair.

Element use is as follows:

1st gear- rear clutch applied and the overrunning clutch holding.

2nd gear- rear clutch applied and the front band applied (holding).

3rd gear- rear clutch applied and the front clutch applied.

4th (od) is basically a separate add-on unit and remains in direct until a command from the PCM to shift into 4th.

Wayne
