Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) mechanic says i may need new axle

My mechanic says that the drivers side ball joint will only go in by hand and is to loose. He says the tube might be shot and need new axle. What do you guys think? Have you ever seen a tube go bad? I do snow plow with the truck. BTW truck is 3500 chassis cab.

Did the old one pop right out by hand? If not somebody either screwed something up by heating it with a torch and stretching it or they got the wrong part.

I have seen that happen where the housing had heavy rust. the old ball joint is pressed out and takes a bit of material with it.
