A couple of questions about a 8.3L Cummins powered motorhome.

Amazing.....

The Cummins is a medium duty engine, correct? And the Dmax and the PSD are classified as light duty, correct? If these statements are true, can someone show me a link backing this up?

As far as I'm concerned it's all in how you look at it. All 3 were available in a medium duty applications, however the HP rating was cut. The Cummins was 325hp 660tq in the Dodge but only 275/660 in the medium duty aplications. The 7. 3 powerstroke is just a IH444 with a different bellhousing adapter and a few other minor changes. And I think the D-max is the same except for some wiring harnesses. Personally I don't know who would want any of these in a larger truck (26001lbs gvw and above) don't send a boy to do a mans job. :D

the 7. 3 was built for medium use from the get go. the 5. 9 was built for equipment use, then evolved into automotive/medium duty use. both are mere entry level [base]engines into the medium truck market. cant speak for the duramax, dont believe it's avaliable above the 5500gm series, might be mistaken, believe anything larger get's the 7. 8 duramax.

This has been covered here before. I believe it was an emissions rating (emissions componets required to last untill projected overhaul) in regard to average miles to overhaul. Something like 350K for the Cummins and 200K for Duramax and PS. I have no link, but a search might turn up something.

There's 3 classifications of heavy duty in diesel engines, light, medium and heavy heavy duty. And you need to look no further than the engine data tags. On the Cummins it is on the timming cover on the Ford it is on the valve cover the Chevy I don't know where it is on it. It does have to do with the life of the emissions. It also has to do with GVW light heavy duty is used in applications up to 33,000GVW medium heavy duty 33,000-66,000 GVW. Also a light heavy duty isn't expected to be rebuilt it is a throw away engine. A medium heavy duty engine is expected to be rebuilt and isn't a throw away.
