i'm heading to florida this sunday with the new truck. i'll probally have about 300 miles on her when i leave. (1500miles) will i be ok to hook to my boat and go?(9000#) i know the motor will be ok but what about the transmission and axel's? it will be a good way to break in the cummins!... . james :D

I wouldn't worry to much about it. On both our 04. 5 and 05 we left the dealership with a gross weight over 30k. Tough way to break it in, but I'm sitting at 211k on my 04. 5 and 80k on the 05.

James! How the heck are ya?!

This isn't scientific or the 'right' way to do things but... I'd do it. I've seen people pamper vehicles and other people use the accelerator like an on/off switch. The pampered vehicles always seem to have the most problems.

I read an article about a year ago comparing 4-stroke motorcycle engines broken in the 'right' and 'wrong' way... he found that the engines that got the tar beat out of them right off the lot made more power and lasted longer...

Of course, I'm comparing apples to axles... but you get the idea.

Later,

Matt

I have always heard the 500 mile break-in before towing was to set the rear end, nothing to do with the transmission...

i asked the dealer and they said dont worry about it. i'll change the fluid in the axel's when i get home. whats going on matt? hope things are well! i should have close to 500 on it before i leave. close enough!... james

Another note, I know this is horrible for maintenance, but I just changed the rear end fluid. Color and consistency was still fine, just a bit low.
