Mega cab Weak a/c

I'm very happy with mine. So far it's been great for me and our overpacking. I just bought a trailer for the Road Runner, and I'm sure it will be great for the long-haul.

The biggest problem is the weak a/c.

If you need a long bed, forget the Mega. Not available. If it was available, the rig woul be a mile long. I don't need a long bed and I love my Mega. Ride and handling are great. Truck does not feel nearly as big as it is. Seats are firm, which I happen to like. I keep my back seat down all the time, huge flat platform for carrying almost anything. I actually wanted it for my dogs but my truck is still too "new" to let them back there, maybe next year. Big enough for anyone under 6 feet to sleep on. On the road I have nodded off back there, diagonally, and I'm 6'3". With seat up carry 5 full sized adults around all day in comfort. Nice space and storage bins behind the back seat. My A/C has been fine (lowest fan setting) in 100+ degree weather. I have the SLT with standard controls. The A/C problem could be related to dual controls. Others seem to have problems, so do some more research. I was looking for the big back seat and the CTD engine, Mega came around, I'm happy. I can deal with any other problem that may arise.

I've tried just about every flavor, 2 QC short boxes, 2 QC long boxes, a reg cab dually and a Mega. The space in the Mega cab is awesome. Being able to store things behind the rear seat is a great feature, one I miss on the quad cabs. I had a big tow strap, fire ext, tie down straps, extra reciever inserts with different sized balls, and several other things in the storage boxes. Then there were blankets, coats, boots and more just behind the seats, which recline:) If I want all that stuff in my QC, nobody is sitting in back. Mine was overloaded with toys, the kids loved the dvd player. I prefer a long box but made due with the short box just fine. I towed huge loads with it and it never gave me a problem. Once broken in I was getting 20 mpg on mostly 60 mph mtn two lanes and some light city driving. These trucks in any configuration are tough to beat IMO.

I didn't like the way the rear seats fold down. It is way to high a platform. I much prefer the fold up QC seats and flat low tray. I still don't think it looks quite right, the Quad cabs with either bed look better to me. Other than that, I am hard pressed to complain. I put 46k miles on it in just over a year and if I really need all that space, I might have kept it. I would have to disagree on it not feeling big. The QC SB feels much smaller and lighter on its feet. The short ones are much easier to park too. There is definately a difference.

Good Luck

I absolutely LOVE the MegaCab, it is like having a car and truck rolled up into one. The interior is roomy for 5 adults and also has storage behind the seat. I have always had long beds, this is my first short bed, I now know the 2 ft difference is no big deal and can't see where I'd ever go back to a long bed. Tailgate down IS a long bed. My A/C blows really cold, not noisy, after a few minutes on high I have to turn it down as it gets too cold. I tow heavy loads all the time - bumper pull and GN trailers, effortlessly. So far I have found nothing to really complain about, I'd buy another one just like the one I have in a minute.

I really like mine. Wish it was an 8' bed, but 99% of the time, the short box is ok. I don't think the A/C is up to snuff (I don't have dual control). It works, but it isn't what it should be. I have also slept in the back with the seats down. It's not Motel 6, but it is convenient. It tows very well, gets decent mileage, and gets me where I'm going. Definately worth looking in to.

Really like the truck. I concur the A/C could be colder, and here I am in Alaska if that tells you something!! I always likes the look of the short box Quad cab, the mega cab looked a little weird... But once lifted they look great. Gas mileage has been, well, horrible. Averaging 15-16, but it is moving almost 8K down the road. If I wanted gas mileage I should have bought a Prius. The room inside is awesome, the 6 speed cup holder leaves alot to be desired. Overall I would buy it again...

the mega cab looked a little weird

This is true. My wife calls ours "the pregnant whale". I really don't notice it that much because I'm INSIDE most of the time. From there, it looks fine!:-laf

Man if I got 15-16 mpg I would be jumping for joy!

mine averages 9-11 mpg 15. 1 is the best I have seen empty

I do really like my Mega cab it is my first new vehicle. I had a Diesel Suburban before this and wanted something more SUV like that can tow alot of weight. to me it's an SUV with a small bed on the back. most of the time the bed does the job for me. I often find my self hauling an M105 trailer to haul the stuff larger than 6' The AC is just ok. it will cool the front passengers as long as it says on all the time. I also slept in the back seat area once it was not to bad. I am lazy and did not want to setup my tent.

i am hoping once the engine breaks in I will get in the mids teens for mpg

that Suburban got 23mpg so I was hoping for more out of the Dodge.

Wow! I'd take that truck to the dealer if your mileage is that bad. I'm in the upper teens most of the time, and around 20 on the highway driving 70-75 with 4. 10 gears. Mine has less than 7000 miles.

After 5 second gen Dodges, this (06) 3rd gen Megacab is outstanding, and plenty roomy. It's very comfortable for 4 adults, and would handle 5 with no problem. I've only made one short trip to NJ, and like the 48re transmission with the tow/haul mode. While running the routes in PA the change in shift points w/o a trailer made it fun to drive. Mileage is not great

(13. 7) on ULSD, but should pick up as soon as I get some miles on it. Don't know how it will be with a trailer, but will find out this weekend. At this point (7800 miles) I would buy another one.

When we first got ours, the mileage (especially towing) was bad. Overhead was well under 10. Now, with the same trailer and about 15,000 more miles on it, overhead shows about 12. 5-13. 5 towing. I haven't figured hand mileage. I have a log, just haven't done the math. It's what I have, so it is what it is. I wish it was better (who doesn't?), but it pulls so well I don't worry too much about the mileage. Every where we go out here is up a hill, so I think it's doing pretty well.

Great information from all of you out there. Thanks.

My lovely 98 3500 is going to be "totaled" by my insurance company because I dropped the new 39' 5th wheel on the bed. Only damage was to the bed rails. At this point they are offering my around $10K and I keep the truck. I already have a replacement bed. So a paint job on the bed (that I can do) and for around a grand I'll be back in business. Problem as I see it is that the new 5'r dresses out around 22,000 pounds loaded. The sweet ole 98 is rated for 19K at best. Maybe I'm trying to talk myself into a new rig. I figured it out last night and I have about $15000 in up grades that I'll eat if I sell her off. One minute I'm thinking do it and buy a new one and the next I'm not so sure.

I live between two major cities Washington and Baltimore

most of the driving around here is stop and go traffic.

I am headed to the beach today a good three hour drive this should tell me how the mpg is really doing. I got the truck back in April and i only have 1700 miles on it. Half of the miles are towing miles. I have been driving my Cobra when I am baby free becuase it gets tripple the mpg and fits well in one parking spot unlike this truck. Mine is a fully loaded Laramie H DRW 4x4 MC 3. 73 68RFE

the heaviest model possible. I really do like the truck and I expect the mpg to improve over time with more miles on the clock. We packed 4 Adults one baby seat and one large 11 year old in the truck and everyone was comfortable for a day of driving. The Megacab is what sold the truck for me

i sat in the Quad Cabs and the Chevy 4 door models and nothing even came close to the room in the rear cargo area. I can slide the drivers seat all the way back and sit in the back seat and my knees to not touch the front seat and I am 6' 2" It makes getting the baby in and out nice and on trips one of us can sit with him to entertain him. in the Suburban it was not comfortable in the back seat for tall people.

I guess you would use a sliding 5th wheel hitch with the short bed?? No way I could make my gooseneck trailer work with a short bed. I've been thinking about a Mega with the Texas conversion to a long bed. That is one long truck...

One thing is for sure, the new trucks are light years ahead of the second gens, you'd better not drive one, you'll be hooked for sure:-laf The brakes, steering, suspension are all way better. The doors don't sag on the hinges like the old quad cabs, the power is awesome even stock. I can think of a ton of reasons to upgrade but then I am a memeber of vehicle buyers anonymous:{

Bart-

I had to chime in on this one. I previously had a 1999 and then 2003 QC and now a Mega-cab..... so I have tried them all and I can say the Mega-Cab is fantastic!!! I have a big family so the cab space was more important to me than the long bed. I can also say the ride of the Mega-cab is superior to what I have owned in the past... ..... even with a dually. I know the general public isnt a fan of the dually fenders but I must say they have grow on me over time. I currently pull a 34 foot bumper-pull and I honestly think the longer wheel base supports the weight of my trailer better as well..... the dual wheels may have a factor in this but I love the control when in tow. I would certainly drive one to see what you think. BTW my average mpg is 18 in the city with 28k miles on the dash. My . 02

The best idea Dodge has had for a truck. I love the extra room. the load floor that is created by dropping the rear seats down is awsome. I would love to see a 4500 or 5500 series truck with the Megacab.
