Hey I have been gone on a long overdue trip while I was on my trip my buddies and I went out to play in the snow. The roads were clear so we found a parking lot that wasn't yet cleared. it had 4" of snow with the top layer frozen solid enough to support my truck driving easy. Well I got in the gas and tried to play a little and pull a donut. I made a full circle in 2wd high range with the tuner up and stopped. we all started looking at each other and starting saying wasn't me. The I realized it was clutch and trans fluid burning. there was no trans temp lights on the dash and I have been to lazy to install my new trans pan and gauges. I got out and crawled around looking for any leaks to see if I saw a bigger problem then the smell. I decided to put it in 4 wheel low to take the pressure of the trans ands drive it to see if it worked still worked ok. I drove 0. 5 miles in 4wd low. then I drove 1. 3 miles in 2wd high range and the rpms would flucuate from RWHP more than ussual. Then after 1. 2 miles of driving the rpms went up and the travel speed ceasted. I called a towing company and they didn't show in less than 20 minutes as promised. I fired up the truck threw in reverse and it went 40 feet then rpms picked up with no travel speed again. So i said "well I already need to be towed 150 miles home and pull the trans, lets see how far we can go before the tow truck comes" headed in the direction where the tow truck had to come from. we started it drove it till it stopped moving let it cool and did it all over again and drove about 3 miles before we met the wrecker. towed it to the towing lot then got my buddy who works for AAA to come pick up up and haul me 150 miles home. I drove the truck on the 2nd rollback and man it stank the got home, unloaded it in the street, and drove it straight into the driveway. Tommorow I will be building a tent around the truck to work under to start pulling the trans bymyself for the most part with a fratured arm (from the very same trip). My buddies wife wrote down the milkage on the bill we found out That the first digits of the mileage was 666 so that explained the the ultimate carnage trip (so many bad things happened but was a good trip).

Thats the story now heres the question. I am buying ATS stuff no goerend, no suncoast, dtt, none of that Strictly ATS. Depending upon damage I may salvage alot of the stock trans. On the ATS website what do I choose for my 2004. 5 in the way of the race valve body? The 03-04 or the 05-06? Where do I draw the line?

I have a banks billet converter sitting in the spare bedroom but I am thinking about selling it though never installed and buying the ATS converter as I can see why it is soooooooo much better and can handle more torque than the banks. I will be upgrading with a ats flexplate, billet input, maybe a new intermediate, seals, high quality clutches and such, new pump, deep pan, and more i cant think of off the top of my head. It all really depends on the condition inside. Its gonna be a big job for one person that doesn't regularly do transmissions and has to do it in his driveway with a fractured arm (not that bad). I used to help out sometimes at the transmission shop and this is my build in a few years. I dont care I am still building it myself. I can't find anyone who wants to take their time and make everything perfect on my truck in this town so I am doing it myself. I honestly don't trust anyone around my truck and don't like looking over peoples shoulders when I get a oil change or even loading up my truck on a rollback. I am a perfectist and they are so few in the automotive field except when you get into the racing side of automotive. But anyways which ATS year model valve body should I be buying? 03-04 or 05-06 valve body for my 2004. 5 dodge with 48re

My Suggestion is call Goerend, especially if your doing the buildup he will help ya through it. Derek many people on here have tried to offer you suggestions, but you seem to "already have the answers" Most of the people have learned through trial and error and are just trying to help ya out. Taking their advice will probably save you $$$. While you have it apart you could change the gear ratios of the transmission if you want also.

I am pretty sure you need a 05-06 VB. While your under the truck look and see if you see a servo motor on the drivers side of the transmission. Servo motor 04. 5+

Since you have already decided on ATS and it appears you are talking of a race/hard driving type application. Suggest you put the line right at the top (stage 5 stuff). While you might be able to save some cash by going with some lower strength/performance parts it would probably cost you more in the long run. From your description of the problem it doesn't sound like a cheap fix anyhow.

Good luck with your repair.

From your profile, you may have done some damage to the transmission long before the parking lot episode. If you are dead set on the ATS product, I would certainly use their converter!

Call ATS and talk to Clint Cannon directly.

Since you're set on ATS why not call ATS and talk to Clint Cannon directly.

I have the ATS triple lock converter and billet flexplate now and love it. I have the Goerend Valve Body. I plan to use Dave Goerend for the rest of my build up of my transmission. I would have got the torque converter and flexplate from him in the first place but I did not know about him at that time. Goerend has great products and great service. He is so willing to help all the time. Hope this helps

I paid the $600 tow bill across state back home. My 2004. 5 QC long Bed DRW barely fit on the roll back. My buddy (the driver) gave up trying to fit my truck on the rollback and went to the bathroom. when he came back I had driven the truck up on the rollback with both rear outside tires sidewall pinched between the rails. after a long ride (3 hours for me, 6 for his family) we got the truck to my house. drove the truck up the driveway in 4WL. Next Day it took me 4. 5 hours to pull the trans. I felt it was pretty good since I did it in my driveway working out of a laundry basket of tools (several residential moves and had to throw away tool box). the shop I used to work at would do it in 4 hours with a shop lift and 2 techs working together. It was a job but I finally got the transmission elevated 4 feet off the ground by myself and slid it onto a cart and tore it apart late last night.

SOMEBODY POSTED THAT I BURNT UP THE TRANS BEFORE THE DONUT IN THE PARKING LOT. THEY WERE RIGHT. I held the transmission in either 1st or 2nd when I did the donut. But every clutch pack in the transmission was burnt very badly. the low/reverse clutch pack was burnt up the most, most likely from driving it 40 feet til it start to burn then flooring it to 3700rpm to move every last inch I could to the next hill to coast down. Over drive clutches were burnt and I had the dodge dealer look at them cuz I had slippage in overdrive (whether it was OD or torque converter clutch I had slippage). I can't get to some of the other parts where the clutches are but I am pretty sure they are also burnt. Some of the other clutch packs are in spring loaded drums which to need to compress the springs to remove the snap rings. I did make my own pump puller though. I used two vise grips tied together with a rope and used it like a sliding hammer.

In all actuality this is not that big of a job. I will be buying a good bit of tools for the job and I will be running down to the transmission shop in town and having them remove some of snap rings in their press. Other than that I have forgoten everything I learnt in school a few years back and I am just using a little bit of common sense and a parts schmatic and am figuring out most of this on my own. I personally feel I could do a better job than the guys in town. My real only experience with transmissions is hanging out at a buddies shop watching him screw up while building transmissions for his customers. i saw alot of things I didn't like and I am simply trying to learn from what i felt was the reason why his shop was starting to turn out crappy work. I did make my start rebuilding transfer cases and being picky about the way I do stuff. When I go to the my buddies transmission shop my nickname is "SLAM" for getting ****** off one day and destroying a aluminum transfer case, of which won't happen again. But anyways I will be updating you guys on how my living room transmission buildup went as soon as parts arrive and I get this thing up and running and back holding up to alot of abuse in my truck again. Since I can't find a write up on the internet where somebody has rebuilt a 48re or even a 46re, I am thinking about doing my own write up so that others can read it and rebuild their own 94 and later 518 (42re-46re) and 618 (47re-48re) transmissions. Any suggestions of where to do my write up would be nice. I wish I could do it one a website as simple as myspace so I don't have to do any of the HTML code bullcrap.

hey i thought something was suspicious. I thought it was strange that the dalmer chrysler applied blue locktite was easy to break loose. i didn' pay no mind to it. I just figured out at 66600 miles somebody else has been in this transmission before I bought the truck. I also couldn't figure out when or what I could have done to burn this transmission up since there are marks where the clutches slipped and burnt the steels that go between the friction then there are marks where the burn was wore off. I now realize why. SOmebody else has been inside this transmission. One of the metal backing plates to the clutch pack has been sanded by hand on one side and a little bit with a 90 degree die grinder with a sanding wheel and on the other side a good bit with just a die grinder with sanding wheel. Then the backing plate had a new life flipped so that other side was facing the friction. This truck actually had the best transmission out of all the trucks I looked at (within 140 mile radius one way) with the factory equipped options I wanted now I see why. This truck was the only one that was DRW that didn't have a 5th wheel or ball mount in the bed for pulling a big trailer. The truck was used at a yaht (big boat sorry can't spell) place cuz the window sticker used to say Anderson Yaht (I wish I could spell) Aberdeen, Maryland.
