Hey Steve, would it be a problem to add the "location" field to the membership advanced search page?

That would help me find less active TN members to contact about our local activities. Thanks.

I don't know if it could be done, that's Steve's dept. but first people would have to include their location in their profile. Right now it's not required and a lot of folks don't include it. I've always wished it was required just for answering questions if nothing else, many times the correct answer depends on where a person lives.

Just a state (where applicable) mentioned in there somewhere should work for the search engine. I don't want to "require" anything else. It would just help us who are looking for folks in a given area--who are online. I realize that there are some folks out there who subscribe and don't have a 'puter at all.

It Should be so Easy

It should be so easy to search the member’s list for their location regardless if they put the information in there user profile or not. Allow the members advance search to work like the forum Search engine works allowing for wilds and key word searches. Don't limit the search to cells or categories have it search the page. That way you could use key word searches like "AK, Alaska, Biggest state in the union :D :D " to try and locate members from Alaska. If a member doesn't list his state or location on the page then he won't get found. Simple as that no one is forced to put any information they don't want to down. But the benefits I believe would be huge for the TDR and its members as it allows us the opportunity to contact and make friends with local TDR members in our area. :)

Please consider this search option.

Recruitment. Personal Contact brought 2 new folks to the meeting. Post Cards mailed to 200 subscribers brought three 3 new folks and 1 who had been to an early dyno event, but none of our other meets. Fliers flopped-so far, but word is getting out.

They'll come looking for us eventually, as we're getting easier to find.

Looks like nothing is going to come of this thread.

Well, easy it wasn't. I had to run it by Robin first to see if she wanted to invest the time necessary to make this happen. We've got a lot of stuff on my to do list right now and both of us have been out of town a lot to be able to talk about it. As a matter of fact I'm flying down to Atlanta thursday to do some work on the servers.

She ok'd the change and I implemented it today. If you go to the members list there is now a list by location option as well as an option on the advanced search to search by location. A problem with it is that the location field is a simple text field so sorting by it sorts by the first character in the field (usually city name). There's no way to implement sorting by state without a TON of programming changes which would not make sense financially. To make this field searchable took about 3 hours.

As to reaching members that aren't on the website the TDR has a standing policy that they will do mailings to members in your area for events. You can contact Robin at rpatton@ix.netcom.com if your interested in that.

What If everyone on their own time had gone into their user CP, And changed their LOCATION to STATE , City?

Then in a simple queery search you can at least browse the state and then find members in your area.

Then again it is up to the Members THEMSELVES to get the format updated.

I have met several members just by having my city and state listed and they took the trouble to look me up. Made some good friends that way.

It's me it's me!

Next meeting is Jan 10th, Dickson--Piston Slapper (Gap) is the host.

Check in to the Mid-Tenn TDR roundtable under Regional Chapters/Events.
