Indulge me for a moment while I remember those who have fallen for our Country by recognizing my dad. Both he and my mom went on to build a life very fitting of the American dream when the Great War ended.

Both of them, hardened by the Depression and their service in the War, prospered in the times that were permitted to them upon there return to civilian life. Yes, Memorial Day is to honor the fallen. But in my eyes this May holiday to me is to honor those veterans who are no longer with us. I am thankful that my father returned and lived to almost the age of 93. I am thankful to those soldiers unknown to me that fell in service that enabled my dad to go on.

I feel that the way my dad lived his life including raising a family in true spirit of the American dream was made possible by his fallen comrades. To those who fell for our country and other fellow servicemen I toast to you for your sacrifice. My dad never spoke too much of what he witnessed in Guadalcanal and other areas of the South Pacific Theater... it was not his style to boast. The only time I ever saw him smoke was when he would light a cigar: once on Veterans Day... the other on Memorial Day.

Thank you dad, and thank you to all who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

FKovalski,

What a wonderful commemoration of your fathers service, the appreciation of the sacrifices made by others, so that your parents could live the American Dream. Your post was written beautifully & showed gratitude for their service & sacrifice so that you (& the rest of us) could live & enjoy our lives in this wonderful country.

How lucky we all are to have had others that were willing to put their lives on the line so that our lives could be better.

This morning, I went to the memorial event at the National Veterans Cemetery in the Phoenix, AZ. area & was surprised at just how many folks were there. I had to park on the shoulder of the highway & walk quite a distance to the event. Another gentleman mentioned how happy he was at the turnout & the fact that there were young people there, also. I shared his sentiment.

I'm sure that your parents are very proud of raising such a thoughtful son.
