Competition Safety Kill Switch

Competition August 4th= EastCoast/West Coast....

Not knowing all the details of this and who the owner was who had the work done. I will say from experience that it is not always the shop at fault. I have had to do repairs like this at the request of the customers due to them not wanting to spend the extra $ up front to do it right the first time. I can also say that eventually things like this come back to bite them and the shop in the butt especially when another shop for some reason has to work on it again.

Now if something like this was done and the owner was not informed of the damage/problem and or the shady repair up front then it is another story. This will and does deserve to be let out of the bag.

Make sure that the customer didn't request this before slamming a shop or tech for doing it.

Every time I have been involved in a repair like this it is put in writing and the customer has to sign the labor agreement stating they wanted to take the shortcut repair option before that kind of shady repair is even started to prevent things like this from happening.

If you take a moment to read the first post again, your answer is there! I can assure you, the owner of the truck did not do this damage neither would he ask to have 26 helicoils installed in his block LOL

The owner of the shop allowed his helper to bottom tap the block. After the helper broke off 3 taps in the block, he came over to check on him to see what he was doing. At that point the helper had used the incorrect tap on 13 of the holes in the block. That is when it was drilled out and helicoiled.

Besides that, I also was very clear in the first post that this was an informative post. It was not a directed slam against the owner of the shop. The post was made so that if someone in the future would do a search on the site, they could find some info on the use of helicoils in this situation.

Funny they didnt even fix their screw-ups the right way.

In my opinion the best way to fix this mess was to re-drill and tap to a larger diameter (ie 14mm stud)

Another good option would be to use the keensert method on the holes (stronger than stock I might add).

I gotcha I reread it. But I was still just pointing out some cautions for people. There were some who really want to go down the slam fest road. I was just getting them to think of it from a different side of the fence. ;)

Jwilliams3 You hit my point dead on I have to say ditto.

You would not be able to do that after drilling the holes larger and tapping them for the 12mm helicoils. The proper way to do it was to exhange the block and as you can see it was not done.

Hammer I was addressing the original mess. Not the part where they botched by using the "helicoil".

Can someone P. M. me the name of this shop so I can stay away from it. I will not post it or bash them on line, I just want to know for my own use.

Thanks,

Rob
