A co-worker ordered a new 2004. 5 and claims that for less than $200 he selected a Mercedes automatic. Just wondered if anyone has heard any details or is he full of it.

MB DODGE

MB is not making transmissions for dodge trucks.

However they are putting there diesel engines in the new grand

cherokee and Dodge Sprinter van. MB will also be coming

out with a twin turbo v8 diesel for the new 211 e-class next year:D Should be sweet as even the older 300 turbo diesels

are awesome.

A little off the subject but if you order a Sterling Truck... . with MB engine and transmission its about 1/2 the price of a Cat/Fuller combination... . BTW. . Sterling is owned by MB... . and in mid range trucks their stuff is well respected... .

Who knows what we might see down the road... .

TRUE

I saw a Sterling semi the other day and on the side of

the truck is said something to the affect of Mercedes test vehicle.

Good point did not think of that one.

STERLING

I do not know that Mercedes bought Sterling but I do know

that sterling Is starting to run Mercedes engines at least

to test North American market.

Yep Sterling is owned by DC

From http://www.sterlingtrucks.com

Sterling was founded by Freightliner LLC in 1998 as a new subsidiary with its own distribution network and distinctive product offerings. Sterling is headquartered in Willoughby, Ohio, in the Cleveland metropolitan area. Freightliner LLC is a DaimlerChrysler company, the world's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer.

With the 600 there are only 2 transmissions available, the 48RE and NV5600.

i will predict that within the nest four years you will see a 5speed auto option also a VGT turbo and a bigger cab. my mouth is watering already!

Sterlings are built in the Old Ford truck plant in St. Thomas, so it's easy to see how quickly it can get confusing.

Wow. I thought Sterling was a Ford product. On their web site, they feature Mercedes trannys in Sterling trucks. It says right on their web site under human resources:

Sterling Trucks is a subsidiary of Freightliner LLC. All Human Resources functions reside on our corporate site.

Western Star is owned by Sterling.

I think they use the same body panel stampings that Ford did. I guess Sterling is what became of Fords over F-600 size when they sold them out to Freightliner.

The DC/Freightliner/Sterling is the old Ford Louisville L-series class 8, along with the Ford Cargo COE. The sale to Freightliner was also concurrent with Ford selling their Cummins stock - the Cummins L10 was the "standard" engine on Ford's class 8 rigs, and they owned stock as a good faith measure. With no more class 8 trucks, they didn't need to cement that relationship with Cummins and sold the stock back.

The rear drive transmission from Mercedes is the NAG1. It is currently in the Sprinter behind a MB 5 cylinder diesel. It will be out this spring behind the Hemi in the new rear wheel drive LX car that replaces the LH (Intrepid, 300M etc. ) cars.
