message notification not working

As a habit I always check the option for instant notification of new messages on threads under subscription options.



It works maybe 1 out of 4 times. Since it works sometimes, I assume I understand the process, fairly straight forward.



So why does it not work other times?



Does the server just not bother to send notifications if traffic is too high?

The server always sends notifications out. Your email server must sometimes be grabbing it as spam. Look and see if your ISP has a SPAM (sometimes called gray mail) folder and see if they are in there. BTW, you can choose what you want that to be by default in your control panel and then you don't have to check it manually.
