I have a 96 2500 4wd 5.9 cummins with 394k miles. Stock with big bhaf air cleaner.
I recently started getting a metal on metal noise(rattle) in the engine at low rpm, when rpms got around 1700 to 2000 the noise go's away. Gradual as gas is applied.
having a gas burner year's ago have the main bearings go out I thought that was the problem. It sounds Similar to mains about to spin out. So I have since replaced the rod, and main bearings. The noise still sounds the same.
I have the timing cover off now and have removed the oil pump which I replaced about 5 years ago. It seems fine no weird noise when I turn it. Also stuck a screwdriver behind every gear and pried on them with no wiggle at all.
