Metal Particles in Fuel Filter Housing

Changed the fuel filter on my 2001 and noticed some fine metal particles in the filter housing, Removed them with a magnet, where would they be coming from, The lift pump? Opinions please.

The last time I changed the filter, I noticed the same thing. A small amount of metal shavings and some that looked like short pieces of wire. Never did figure out where it came from... That was the fourth change at about 50,000 miles.
