Last Saturday I changed the fuel filter for the first time on our new(to us) 98. It had some metal shavings in the bottom of the canister, most pretty small, and then today when I cleaned the pre filter out, it had metal shavings in it!? Where are these shavings coming from? LP?

Probably from your lift pump. If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, you should at least check your fuel pressure and be prepared to slap in a new lift pump. I changed mine a while back. The current pump is an improved design and should last longer than the original. Oo.
 
Unfortunately shavings can also come with the fuel you're buying. Shavings from pipeline and service station pumps are quite common especially from stations that don't service the filters in their pumps much. I've heard that some stations will punch holes in the filter element so they don't have to service them at all.



The TST adaptor is only good for temporary use, if you get one you'll see why, it would be very easy to break off. I have one I use to check other people's rigs, just screwed the adaptor into a grease gun hose then used a 60lb water pressure gauge with 1/8" threads on the other end. You also need a 1/8" coupling to connect the male gauge and hose ends together.



I like tapping the injection pump banjo bolt better, much easier to access than the top of the filter. Screw a needle valve into the port you tap to shut down the flow if you don't want a permanent gauge.

If you can tap your manifold for a pyro the banjo bolt is a piece of cake.
