I want to replace the rubber valve stems on my dual wheel steel rims with metal stems. Has anyone done this? Will standard metal valve stems work with these rims? What length will I need? Thanks.

Casey

Not sure where you get them, but my Alcoa wheels from Southwest Wheel came with them installed. They are about 3 1/2" long and metal.

I believe the aluminum rims take a different type of stem than the steel rim does. Thanks.

Casey,

My local tire dealer gave me a couple of metal valve stems for my truck, I used one of them in Tennessee when I got a leak in the oem rubber stem. I think if you go to any tire distributor that deals with larger trucks, you should be able to find them there. I always carry a couple of valve stems, lug nuts and a fuel filter in the truck.

On a dually I'd stick with the rubber stems. I've had such a problem checking pressure on mine that I cut out the opening in the trim rings/covers so I can get my hand in there. A rubber stem gives you a little flexability that a metal stem won't. Before I did the cut outs I almost triied to ruin the cover/trim rings when I took them off to check pressure. I hated spending 10 extra mins just to check tire pres.

If you really want to go to metal, any truck tire shop should have them. My trailer has 16ply tires that take 125psi and those require metal stems. I don't see any reason they won't work on the pickup as well. Up here in MN we use a lot of roadsalt and the stems on the trailer are 3 yrs old and not rusting off... yet.
