I like to crawl around under my trucks, I know most of you guys do the same thing. Noticed something different between my 2000 truck made in St. Louis and my 2002 truck made in Mexico. The Mexican made truck has a sealant almost like undercoating applied on all of the sheet metal under the truck forward of the bed. My 2000 St. Louis made truck had bare metal on the entire bottom of the truck. I did notice that stated in my 2000 owners manual, Mexican trucks had a sealant applied. Anybody know why the difference?

Me Too!

Pit bull:

Mine has that undercoating too. Only bad thing is it melts from the heat from my 4" exhaust. Nothing on my invoice indicates undercoating.

Anyone know why the undercoating on Mexico built trucks?

Don't suppose the dealer had that done. I've delt with dealers who throw that on there and charge you an extra $800 and they do it to all their vehicles, trying to get some extra cash out of ya.

Also it might have something to do with the lack of pollution restrictions in mexico. It could be something they can put on tthat can't be done here. I noticed that stuff on mine too when I crawled under it for service not long after I had it.

Wasn't the dealer, could be that the rules are different in Mexico, but why would DC spend more on a truck made in Mexico then in the USA. I would think they would just leave it off all of them. Don't get me wrong I'm glad it is on the new truck I just wondered if anyone new why the difference?

Yeah! Mine has it on there also......

that black undercoating/sound deadener looking stuff. And only on the cab floor area not the bed just like Pitbull said. Beats me why it's there:confused: but I'm not gonna complain.

Yes most dealers of ANY make vehicle will make you bend over and take it  when it comes to charging for undercoating.

Must be something they started doing in the last year or two because I don't have any undercoating.

My 2001 truck was built in Saltillo 03/03/2000.

Mine has it. Built March 2000 in Mexico. Dealer did not do it. Only complaint is the rear cab wall did not get the coating.

There are two plants in Mexico. Mine was built at the Lago Alberto assembly plant, and it has the coating. I wonder if ift was just done at that one plant?

The only sound-deadening equipment that came with mine is the big silver blanket/pad thing that is mounted to the fire wall. Not sure what the actual name of that thing is.

And then of course the black thing mounted underneath the hood.

I always assumed everyone got the silver blanket/pad. You guys with spray-on got that silver pad?

Were talking about sprayed on sealant under the truck not in the engine compartment. Almost looks like under coating???

Yea, I was just mentioning the silver pad thing because that's all I got on mine. And just in case DC was using one sound-deadening device instead of another. Guess they're not.

I've been under my truck a lot - definitely no spray on.

Mine was built at the Saltillo plant and it has no coating. Maybe they were strapping illegals to the bottom and didn't want to damage the paint! Seriously, it probably is for sound deadening, trying to make em more attractive to diesle sound haters.

My Mexican-built '02 has the undercoating too - a very nice job in fact... I was especially impressed with the VERY nicely painted frame and suspension parts - been trying my best to keep it all looking nice and clean - a bit easier for me, since I garage mine and don't drive it as much as most here...

I recently sold my 2000. It was built in Mexico and had no undercoat. My 2002 was also built in Mexico and has it. Maybe that is what we got for the deleted wheel well liners, underhood insulation blanket, passenger assist handle and side trim??

sound deadening stuff....

I believed we all got the heat reflective pad on the firewall, not the same tho for under hood insulation :( looks like some (including me) got the spray on stuff under the cab as well:) seems like they (DC) take stuff away from us and give us other stuff that doesn't make a difference whether we really need it or not. Kinda like getting . 50 cents change for a dollar.

Mexico City, Mexico

I have a 2002 and it was built in Mexico City , Mexico and it has the under the cab under coat. The factory stuff looks good and they did a great job but I have ordered some POR 15 to do the rest of the truck( wheel wells and under the bed ).

By the way my dealer told me that the truck would not come with undercoat and tried to sell me a package that they do. I told them that most of the trucks on there lot that were from Mexico already had the undercoat on them and they said that they applied it not the factory. I told them that I would take my chances and for them not to apply anything. Well when my truck finally arived it had the undercoat on it from the factory. The dealer told me that it was the first one they had seen like that. I saw my truck come off of the transport truck along with some others and they all had the undercoat except the ones made in Missouri . I think they were trying to gain more profit by telling customers that they were installing the undercoat and charging big dollars for the service. They were VERY quite when I proved that my truck came with it from the factory.
