Waxing your camper?

just a quick question. i have the michelin 265/75/16 load e tires from the factory. my door sticker only gives info on a 245/75/16 tire. if any of you are using the 265's--what max pressure should the tire be at when towing heavy load. thanks for help.

your right -- i went and checked and it says 'max psi 80lbs'.

thanks for the help. should you run them at max when hauling?

You should have received a tire pressure booklet with the truck. It states the recommended pressures for each truck configuration.

Tir Pressure

I have the same tires and run 80 rear and 70 front when towing. I do lower the pressure when not towing

Below is a table for the E rated Michelin tire.

Over/Under inflation can be dangerous, and does shorten the tire life. KNOW the loaded weight and inflate accordingly. Michelin Tire gave me the formula that computes the various PSI.

Air Pressure Formula

Here is a formula that you can use for any tires.

(Axel weight divided by # of tires on axel) divided by Max recommended load weight times max recommended load pressure

ie. (3450/2)/3042*80=45. 4

Calculating Tire Pressure

Axel # of Tires Tire Max Tire Recom

Weight on Axel Rating Pressure Pressure

3450 2 3042 80 45. 4

4000 2 3042 80 52. 6

8800 4 2132 50 51. 6

You can set this up in a spread sheet and by changing any of the variables (axel weight, # tires, weight rating, or tire pressure) it will give you the recommended tire pressure.

The side of the tire may tell you that 80 psi is the Max. pressure for full load per tire - but do you really want to bounce down the road and wear the center out of the tire???

Do you??

Check my signature for my rig. I run down the road like this everyday without bouncing. Maybe you got some suspension/shock problems. I have 35,000 on this set of tires, they were rotated two days ago, and they have 60% of the tread left. If you are wearing out tires and bouncing, you might need to get your front end looked at.

Jumbo & TR - nice to see someone post who has some clue about tire pressure! Another thing to consider is safety. The tire manufactur provides the max. pressure and load ratings on the sidewall in an attempt to keep a flat tire profile on the road - which in turn give the best stopping power. Any pressure over/under does not do this. Also if you read the tire info phamphlet that came with your truck, you'll see that the minimum tire pressure 0f 40# for the rear corresponds to the actual weight on the tires for an unloaded truck - and is the pressure that your formulae recommends.

Sorry, during the pulling season for me, I use the max recommended on the tire. During winter when I do no heavy pulling I drop it of 15#. Tires have 35,000 on them and show NO signs of giving up (they have over 60% tread life left) I don't have the time to keep going to a spreadsheet everytime my weights change and change all 6 tires presssure. Formula may be perfect, but not for my lifestyle and don't see as I could gain anything when I can't wear the tires out now, have no wear patterns, am not bouncy, etc, etc. To each his own.
