Is this tire as good as it sounds on the Michelin web site. It sounds like it would be ideal for a 3500 4x4? All season traction, good long wear and a solid shoulder tread for the heavy outside wear that these trucks give to the front tires. Anyone have any experence with them? How much do the cost?

Thanks

Good tire,

I just ate up a set over the summer (my bad habits).

They cost about $200 each.

But, if I was going to buy new, I would get the LTX MS

it seems to have longer tread life.

didn't like the LTX A/S

Pit Bull - I just replaced the LTX A/S tires that came stock on my 2500 4x4. I got about 36,000 miles out of them, but I hated all 36,000 miles that they were on my truck. IMO, they were terrible in the rain and even worse in the snow. If I got in wet grass, the tires would always spin - needed 4x4 to prevent spinning.

On the good side, the tires wore very evenly and handled well on dry pavement, but that's about all the good I can say about them.

I replaced them with 285/75/16 OWL Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVOs. These are awsome tires. See this post for my comments on these tires.

I would never buy the LTX A/S again! My 2 cents...

hey PB... Isn't that what's on your rig now. . factory stock tire on mine... . but you know what I'll say about a tire for the 3500's. . yup the XPS traction or hwy is the best IMHO. . I use the traction

my first rig got 25k on the LTX and replaced with XPS and got 60k on them when I wrecked the rig

new rig got 40k on factory LTX replaced with XPS traction and have 35K on them now and another 30k or so left

getting better mileage do to more road trips with fewer curves and twisties to grind off the tread.

Mine came with the Goodyear Wrangler AP's. I like the tread design, similar to the Michelin XPS RIB but with more traction bars. I would love to have the XPS RIB all the way around but they have a "BAD" snow rating, and I do see some snow here. I was thinking I could go with the XPS RIB on the steer wheels and the XPS Tractions on the drive wheels but I don't know if the RIB's would still be a problem in the Snow. The XPS Tractions would be great but I have a lot of curves around here and with that open tread design I don't know how well they would hold up. I had the Michelin LTX MS on my 2000 CTD 3500 4x4 and the front outside edges wore and they needed to be rotated every 3K miles (I had the alignment checked on the 2000 and it was fine, just the combination of heavy front-end and curves in the road). Well what do you think? I know I still need to wear these out but since I still can't figure out what is the right tire for my truck based on where I live I thought I would start early doing my research. If the XPS Tractions would hold up on the curves that is the way I would go. But they are expensive!!! I can get the XPS RIB's for $158 at the local Sam's but they don't stock the Tractions so they would be in the $200+ range. I would love to find a great wearing good traction and good looking tire in the $125 range?? Sorry for the long answer ;)

I live at 4000 Ft... . in the mountains. . so I also have the snow [heavy drop will see 3' +/- thank God not often]. . AS well as the mountain roads... the side wall is VERY tuff and will not "roll over" so the wear is great... . as to the traction. . never got stuck yet and should have several times. . yes they are a little "slick" in very heavy snow/rain but in my experience no worse than any other on a Dually. . caution is always out in winter conditions. . see lots of black ice here also and it is no bigger issue than on another tire... . I run them year around

I weigh 350lbs and with the tire off the rim I can sit on the casing and not collapse the tire down. . I do air down a bit in winter [10/15 lbs]

Guess I need to start saving my money! What do you think of the XPS Rib's up front and the Tractions in the rear?

NOT A GOOD IDEA... different treads on a front axel v/s rear not cool on a 4x4... they want to swap ends. . the more agressive one will over power the less agressive ones

Thanks, I guess I will have to go XPS Traction on all corners. They are better looking then the RIB's. Do they throw a lot of rocks on your rig?

oh BTW. . if you have a Costco near you and you are a member. . they either have in stock or can special order for you... I think I paid around $155 ea. [note. . plus balance charges which are lowest around mount is free]

DISCLAIMER... . I no longer work for Costco. . I'm RETIRED :)

That price would be worth the drive to KC and the membership cost. Thanks

I have the stock 265/75x16 Michelin LTX on my truck. They've given me great service. I have over 68,000 miles on them right now and still have a little tread left before the tread is down to the wear bars. Tead wear is very even. For me, they have very good grip in the rain; I can't testify to snow. :)

I put a bunch of expressway miles on my truck at 75 - 80 mph. No vibration. They are VERY smooth on the road. Handling is adequate; I don't drive a Porsche, I drive a 6700 lb. truck! ;)

They do a perfectly adequate job towing my 12,000 pound fiver.

Having said all that, I am probably going to chance a change of tire and go with the Toyo Open Country A/T 305/70s (E rated). I'm looking for a little more rubber on the road and the Michelin does not come in wider sizes (in an E load rating).

By the way, Sam's Club will "special order" members the Michelin LTX AS for $163. 00 each.

My truck came with the Michelin LTX A/S tires. I couldn't get them off fast enough. When it rained (which isn't very often here thankfully) the would hydroplane bad. Off road was even worse. They had so little traction that they would spin up hills so bad that the ABS and Brake lights would come on.

After enduring 4400 miles with these tires, I went to the Goodyear store down the street and had them put MT/Rs 315s on. I just wish I hadn't waited so long.

This was the second set of Michelins I have had, and the last. I know that many members have had wonderful luck with their Michelins, but I haven't. I know that many members haven't had much luck with Goodyear, but I have always had excellent luck with Goodyear.

That is interesting, because my 2000 3500QC 4x4 ETC/auto had Michelin LTX/MS's and this new truck has the Goodyear Wrangler AS. I live on a steep hill and when it rained hard I would often have to put my 2000 in 4 wheel drive to get up the hill. Even if it rained a little I would spin the rear wheels when I was not in 4x4. My new truck with the Goodyear's has not spun at all??? Now my new truck is a 3500RC ETH/DEE 4x4 with a shorter wheel base but I really think that the Michelin's had a harder slicker rubber compound that made them wear longer but hurt the traction. I like the tread design on the Goodyear Wrangler AS and I hope they do a good job for the next 60K miles. Then I will switch to the Michelin XPS Traction, unless the Goodyear's continue too impress me. Thanks for the information everyone.

This Michelin came on my '99 2500 4x4. Very good tire on the hiway - not real good in show and ice, especially with the Cummins. Rotated around every 5,000 miles and kept all four at 55 psi. Not much heavy towing or hauling. Just traded with 52,000 miles and still had a lot of tread left. I'd say if you're on the pavement most of the time and not a lot of snow, this Michelin is a very nice tire.

Michelin's

My truck came equipped with Michelin LTX M/S tires which I recently replaced with Michelin LTX A/Ts. The stock M/S's were still street legal after 63k miles and provided a great ride, but with Winter coming, I wanted a little more "bite" in the snow

I looked at the reviews on www.tirerack.com to see what they had to say about the Michelin A/Ts and the BFG A/Ts.

I finally decided to go with the Michelins. Costco had a $60 rebate on the Michelins, when you purchased 4 tires, which made them slightly less expensive than the BFGs. I've had great luck with Michelin and BFG and think either way would be a good way to go. If you live where it snows, or do off road driving, I think the A/T's are the better choice.

Good Luck,

Frank

LTX AS only for street purposes

These tires are good only for on road purposes. They suck off road especially or anywhere you need any bite in low traction situations. I've been stuck 3x already in my 4x4 I hate it! But it's nice to get good MPG on the hi-ways.
