microglass or standard

What is the difference between the microglass and the standard oil filter for our first gens? Which is better? Thanks Bill

It's my understanding that a microglass filter takes out particles down to about . 001" and the standard oil filter takes out particles down to . 015". If this is incorrect, I'm sure someone will chime in.

I spent some phone time on the Fleetguard tech line (1-800-223-4583)last year asking this same question.



The standard filter (LF3349) has a cellulose element and removes 95% of particles @ 30 microns.

The microglass element (LF 3552) is synthetic and removes 100% of particlers @ 30 microns.



At least this is what they told me at the time.

The LF3552 is clearly a better filter. It is more efficient. It is considered an "upgrade" over the standard LF3349.



The cost is only about $2 more for the better filter... no contest.

By the way if you are anywhere near a Fleetpride truck parts store they carry Fleetguard and give a nice TDR discount... the LF 3552 costs $8. 15 with the disount. That's the cheapest I've found in CT area.

Thanks JLEONARD, I was wondering about this myself. Along the same line, I think I read here a while back that the LF3349 was being replaced by another number. Anyone have the number? Last week I got a new filter, and asked the dealer (International dealer). They weren't aware of this and had stock of the LF3349, so I just got one of them until I got the details.

I have been running the microglass filters on both of my 12 valves and my Dad's 24 valve. I get the from Schied Diesel in Lafayette. Schied says that is the only Fleetguard filter oil filter they carry for the B5. 9 engines. I think it is well worth the extra money, especially on higher millage engines.

I called fleetguard and they told me the best oil filters for my 92 ctd is the stratapore LF-3894. They said it was better at filtering the oil than even the microglass. It is also cheaper than the micro-glass.
