Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) What did I do

My 2001. 5 ETH's MIL is ON, but there are no DTCs reported.

After clearing it and having the MIL come back on, I thought I'd better ask around.

Has anyone experienced this before?

(the DTCs are being read with a generic reader with which I was able to read a low coolant temp DTC the last time the MIL came on)

You don't need a code reader to read codes in a 2nd gen. Just switch the ignition key from OFF to ON to OFF to ON to OFF to ON and leave it there. Codes will be displayed on the little LCD screen (your odometer).

See if any codes show up this way and report back...

That does not work on the 98. 5's and 99's, just the 2000-2002's. SNOKING

Thanks SNOKING, I didn't realize that.

Atleast he won't wear his ignition out trying this method over and over and over wondering why it doesn't work...

I've had a few codes that never came up on the ODO also. I think out of the 4 or 5 times I've had a code only once was I able to find it with the ODO, the rest of the time I had to use a code reader.

As for the no code situation, try a different code reader.

Using the ignition switch sequence to read the codes I got:

PCU P1693

ECU P0230

After started the engine the MIL is now OFF. It took a day for the MIL to return when I cleared it Saturday.

Are these code self-clearing if the error goes way?

0230 is transfer pump or also called lift pump out of range . do you have gauges if not get pump pressure checked. low pressure can take out the injection pump.

P1693 is the code saying there's a code set in the ECM which turns on the MIL
P0230 as stated above is transfer (lift) pump problem.

Joe

Has anyone heard of these DTCs being intermittent (MIL ON/OFF every few days) or has it been once ON it stays ON?

(My fuel pressure sensor went out and the new will be here Friday)

Most of the time, these MIL lights are NOT intermitint. GET IT CHECKED. These will not go away on their own. These computers set MIL for that reason, to alert you.

Dave

The pump was dead at 116,510 miles and 3263 hours - no sound when the motor was "bumped".

I replaced the lift pump the Napa part (made by Carter) and the filter, motor ran when the engine was bumped and idle pressure is between 12 and 14 psi.

Thanks for everyone's help.

(Does anyone know why the Carter requires that a new filter be installed at the same time or the pump warranty is void?)
