My '01 24 valve just began showing the above symptoms. Starts and runs normally but shortly after the first start in the morning, MIL comes on, tach was at zero for a short time, but truck never seemed to miss a beat. Only code I get is 1693 generic code. Need to make a trip for Christmas and would like to figure this out before Fri. Any ideas? As always, thank you guys, for any advice. Jim G

Thanks guys, cam position sensor or crank position sensor. I may have to let a pro check it out, my electrical diagnosis skills are poor. If I can't see an obvious broken or disconnected wire, I figure it must be OK!

When My Cam sensor crapped out, my truck turned into a pig. It is an easy swap, but a real PITA to get to if you have big hands

my truck lost the tach once. but it wouldnt run afterward. im not sure when they did away with the cranks sensor in ctd. I think 01. but am not sure. mine has a cam and a crank sensor. mine was a broken tone ring on the crankshaft. but it wouldnt run after it broke. the reason it says p1693 is because the code is in the ecm not the pcm. the pcm is the one checked for codes with the key on,off,on,off,on. sounds like a bad sensor.

From my searching, it seems the 01 has only a cam position sensor, not a seperate Crank PS? I will have it scanned for codes and replace the sensor if necessary. Today the light came on while driving and the truck did seem to loose power. Any one know if this is a dealership only part, or available anywhere else? Again, thanks.

UPDATE, had codes read today, it is 0341, camshaft position sensor. I will give Dan at Cummins a call and replace it my self before the week end. I hear it's a tight squeeze to get at and a real PITA. Thanks for the tips, Jim G
