I have not asked many questions on this site. Reading most of the posts has answered any question I have had in the past. I must say, what a great place to get info!

One has come to mind here since I started looking for a winch. I am interested in a hydraulic winch that gets pressure from the power steering pump. The boost for brakes on my 01. 5 comes from ps pump. If the pump fails, lines, or a any part of the system, which results in fluid loss, will this also kill the brakes or just the boost to the brakes? Are the brakes a closed system independent of the boost? Thanks

It will only kill the boost to the brakes.

I have heard good things about this winch. Military is buying a lot of them.

Also, check out Harbor Freight. They have a fantastic deal on an electric winch. It appears that Ramsey lost a patent that Harbor picked up. It doesn't have the fastest retrieval speed but the price is incredible.

Thanks mbaston, I thought it would be that way, makes sense. Thanks for the tip on Harbor, though I really want a hyd winch for my use. More long cycles than short, plus at Winches Plus they are about $750.

IMO We have enough problems with the power steering pump to start with. I would get a basic PTO pump and run your winch off that.

EDIT - Oops, auto transmission, never mind

I was under the impression that a PTO could not be hooked up to a 01. 5 automatic. If so, where would you find one and what do they cost?

In regards to that harbor freight winch. Do they have anything larger than 9,000 lb? I checked their website and that was the largest one I could find. Do you have anymore info. on the winch that Ramsey lost the patent on.

Something like that would be ideal. I would only pull in emergency situations. But I would want a biggie to pull our big trucks.

I have good and bad luck with Harbor freight stuff. The price is right but I have broken a lot of their hand tools.

tks
