Can anyone tell me how the trip computer calculates average mileage (above the basic mileage/fuel=mpg). Does it use the "instant" reading from the overhead computer, a different sensor, or something in the ECM? Does it measure in fractions of a gallon or just the whole number? I'm trying to figure why there's such disparity with the average results I'm getting. The display is usually 1. 2mpg to the low side, but it can vary as far as 3mpg, usually during cold weather. The only explanation I can find would be if the computer reads "0" mpg during idling and applies that number the same as it applies the 18mpg at cruising speed. This would be a basic function of instant mpg, time, and distance, to equate to an average mpg. It would also not be very accurate.

Does anyone know for sure how these things work?
