Has anyone experienced fuel mileage decrease with an aFe filter kit?? I have an 04. 5 600, bone stock I was getting 18. 3mpg going by the overhead console and calculating it myself. I installed an Edge EZ, the console read out 25. 6 mpg but never checked this on paper. I installed an aFe filter and a torque tube, now the console reads out 22. 3 mpg it checks out to 18. 5 on paper. Could it be the Edge chip is making my mileage indicator go haywire or is it the filter and torque tube?? Also will a performance exaust give me those numbers back???

Thanks,

Nathan

The edge box totally whacks out the overhead display of milage. This also happened with my 2000 when I added bigger injectors. Yo are adding more fuel to make more power so the engine is not working as hard so the computer thinks better milage...

What kind of boost #'s and Egts are you producing? I hope you didn't install that computer thing without guages! Unfortunatley the only thing that will get your mpgs back up is to adjust the way you calculate it, just round down the amount of gallons by about 5 gallons LOL. Our 03 overhead thing has always been wrong, from your manual calcs I'd say your mpgs haven't changed, and no a new exhaust won't help that much. Don't drive blind, get the guages if you haven't allready.

Adding air will not make your MPG drop. The only thing that will drop is your EGT's. The edge will play havoc with the computer on truck, so the overhead which was only mildly interesting before, is now out in left field. Simple test: unplug the Edge and run it for a tank. Also, NEVER run a box without gauges. It's a recipe for disaster... .....

The edge box does not totally whack out your display box. You overhead console reads mpg by what the ecm says its using for fuel. With an EZ on the ecm does not compensate or even know what the EZ is doing. This happens in every truck. BTW if you read most of the posts on the overhead console they are way off for the newer gen. trucks. The only way to calculate and be exact is by hand.

Nathan, It looks to me like you are getting . 2 MPG better since adding the aFe. Why do you say it decreases???

You cannot trust the over head when a chip is installed. We have also heard of some mileage loss using the Pro-7 drop in elements in some cases. We have been using the Scotty air intakes with 2-stage foam filter elments. They flow great and lower EGTs while providing excellent filtration.

Several posts have indicated that on the 3rd gen trucks in particular that the overhead was off even more than before the chip install. I believe the overhead gets it's info from the throttle position sensor. If the chip is adding more fuel at a lower RPM with less throttle, then the ECM would show great mileage... ... .

Vaughn, I don't think so... . he is confused, when he checks by hand, he is getting better mileage with the AFE7, not worse!

Thanks for the help/advice...

Thanks to all for the help!! In response to Vaughn Makenzie-Yes I installed a Pro Guard 7 and it makes the "filter minder" read in the red so I agree it could possibly be restricting air flow or just a bad filter minder. . Who knows??!! In response to Elite1 I never checked the mileage on paper with the EZ and stock airbox, I'm WAS presuming the overhead was right, but now I'll go back and eliminate some more variables... like the overhead console, and post back after Thanksgiving since my truck is being repainted bumper to bumper after 1700 mi because of "rail dust" so the dealer says. Looks like dirt under the clear coat to me!! I currently do not have pyro and boost guages I sold them on my 01 for the fear of bringing the bad luck of PUMP FAILURES to my 04. 5 LOL. I'll get the guages when Cummins releases the e-brake Jan 22 05, That way I'll have a good place to screw in the thermocouple. :D

04. 5,QC,325/600:6 spd 4X4 3:55 rear end, Edge EZ, Proguard 7 w/torque tube, Patriot blue metallic pearl coat

Let us know what your mileage checks out at NMansfield. Good idea on the gauges, don't wanna jinx the new ride ;)

dmbarker from the number of posts I'm seeing with guys having filter minders suck down with the AFE 7 tells me it's restrictive, and I heard when someone questioned an AFE rep about it his response was the AFE 7 offers superior filtering performance but wouldn't comment on flow. Myself I would stick with the standard one if you wanted to run an AFE.

Dude, what are you smoking? The edge box totally screws up the overhead. Its done it to my duramax and to my 04. 5. In both instances, it ups the mpg by about 4-5. The minute you take it off, it goes to normal. As a side note, I just ran a 1000 mile trip, and my cummins got 17. 2 mpg, both hand calculated and per the overhead monitor. So at least mine is pretty accurate.
