Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) wrong oil - need advice

I went to the "Dealer" to get power window fixed. I noticed a sign that said DC will not honor fuel system warranty if you don't have a documented fuel filter change at 15k intervals. I bought my truck with 10k on it and did not install new filter till 20k. This may be in the manual, but I'm guilty of not reading it. JC

I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone having warranty service denied for not providing proof of fuel filter changes. I personally change mine every other oil change, which averages out to be about every 8 to 10K miles. Probably a bit overkill, but I wouldn't sweat going 15K. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have a year and a half and nearly 24,000 miles on my '02, and have never changed the fuel filter...

I have had a pusher pump and guages on my truck since new, and fuel pressure is within 1 PSI of what it was when new - but I *am* a little concerned that eventually the filter element material might deteriorate and cause problems, so will probably swap it out soon.

Any comments?

"I just watch fuel pressure and change when needed. I have a guage in my 97 and 01. "

How many miles do you typically get out of your filters between changes before you start seeing reduced PSI?

Oil, oil filter, fuel filter every 7500. 12 bucks and an extra 5 min. is cheap insurance. 70K+ on my LP and holding 12psi. Poor trans is another thing all together, they don't like torque.

I have 4 Dodges and a couple of cummins powered dump trucks. We use fuel pressure gauges as the only way to tell when to replace the fuel filters. We have had bad fuel take out 4 filter elements before tank was clean. I have had filters go 20,000 miles without losing 1 pound of fuel pressure also. You should not use filter element for more than 1 year as the paper elements degrade over time. :D

i usually change at about 35k miles. . just changed last monday at 33k,i still had full pressure before the change.

i too changed only because of filter degradation possibility..... im certain that in time the filter will begin to disintegrate, however,i have never seen any signs of it ... other than a change in color, they look good!!!!

i should mention that my fuel passes through 2 inline filters (before and after the pusher pump)im sure this helps extend my change time..... good luck!!!... 117k miles on my truck at this writing, and going strong!!!..... tom;)

I too have added 4 filters at various points in my transfer/fuel supply before fuel even gets to the lift pump - not real concerned about the stock filter getting plugged - the guage would alert me to that, but eventual degradation of the filter material COULD be a problem - so I guess PSI or not, it's time for a change!

Mileage on the FF varies a lot. i just had to change mine b/c of a moisture problem. I went 15K on the first one, and had to change this one at <8K.

Within reason, the FP gauge is gonna tell you best when you need to change. Think of it as a "filter minder" for the FF (at least if you run a post-filter guage-- you DO run post-fiolter, don't you?)

I run my fuel pressure guage right off the inlet to the VP-44 - PSI is 23 at idle, 20 down the road - towing or otherwise, and will typically drop to about 15 at full load on a steep grade when towing...

I've read the procedure for swapping the fuel filter in the past, but will have to look up the info again - not real confident of the replaceable element vs a spin-on - sure looks like it would be easy for contamination to loosen from the old filter during removal, and then remain inside the housing during the change, and then be passed on to the VP-44 on startup - but I suppose I'll get a better picture after I've done it once...

It takes maybe 15 minutes to put a bunch of on a speadsheet...

showing all of your oil change and filter changes. ;)

I didn't change my 1st till 21k, then did it every other oil change. But now that I've got a fp gauge, I'll only do it when it needs it.
