Was stuck in Cody, Wy waiting for new injectors to be installed. Truck ran great for the first day.

Stayed in W Salt Lake City last night with hopes of making it to Zion National Park today.

Started the truck this morning with nothing but rough idle and white smoke with new injectors installed.

Called around and located a FCA at a Dodge dealer for almost twice the price as Genos Garage.

The space next to us in the RV park was a Ferd fan but generously offered a ride to the dealer.

Installed the new FCA and purrs like a kitten. I'm at 200k so I'm sure the injectors were surely at their end . My only regrets is that I had to pay someone to install the injectors which is zsomething that I can do myself.

Just be aware that sometimes, . . . . It isn't just the injectors.

JHawes,

Sorry to hear that. Mine were fine at 230k in an '06 however, Joe Donnelly has written in his TDR articles that he believes the service life of HPCR injectors is about 100k miles. You probably didn't waste your money but as you said, you could have saved the installation labor.

Mac,

The Fuel Control Actuator (FCA) is frequently mentioned in these pages. I always suggest replacing it first before injectors because it is often the cause of those symptoms and is cheap to eliminate before spending big bucks on injectors. I think it regulates the return flow of fuel from the pressure rail.

If I recall, didn't the shop say it wasn't the FCA?? And didn't I ask how they "determined" it wasn't the FCA??? Hmmmmmmmmm...

There is a lot more labor and markup to be made in a set of six injectors than one lowly, cheap little FCA. Those factors are probably an incentive for some diesel shops.

Two days later, I'm still having issues on the first crank of the day. No smoke. Just an odd idle after I turn the engine for the first time of day.

Idles and runs fine after that.

Any ideas. Fuel rail? Loose connections?

Possibly the cross over tubes were not installed correctly and to TQ spec. They may have shortcutted the operation. If you start having slow or hard starts, good indication to check the cross over TQ.
