Changed my serpentine belt. It had small cracks throughout. It had been on for 52,228 miles. Is that enough miles for wear ? I replaced the pully tensioner, (Cummins part) about 18 months ago, but I had not chaged the belt. Thanks in advance for any comments...

@ 50k the belts do show a bit of cracking,I don't think the risk is worth gambling trying to run them longer. I do see people doing 100k on them but not for me. Any problem you have to deal with on the road will negate any initial savings .

I only go about 30 to 35K on the belt and always carry a old one as a spare. It might be premature on the miles but that gives me peace of mind.

I'm curious. Has anyone actually broken a serpentine belt? I changed mine at 115K. It had cracks but no indication that it was about to break.

I drive a class C for a part time job. The truck has 302K on it and the belt looks like it has never been changed. It looks like it has a lot of wear but no sign of breaking.

Serpentine Belts

The packages usually state, good up to 70,000 miles. I guess it depends where your comfort level is. Diana

Small cracks in a serpentine belt are OK as long as they are all across the width of the belt. It's when you see cracks along the length of the belt, fraying, or chunks missing that it's time to replace it.

The belts on the bus 5. 9's will sacatter w/out warning. I replace them very often. I an now employing the use of the NAPA/Gates green stripe/fleet runner. They are to go 250,000 I think or more. I won't ever see that on a bus... ... ... .

When the belt goes on the bus, it takes out the ($800. 00) electric fan clutch, engine wire harness etc. :-lafOo. :D I also replace the tensioner (very) often as they too let go with out warning and the bus is setting along the road. A new or old tensioner will scatter. It won't matter the miles, they just fly apart.
