When can you expect a failure?
what have you done(repair's)
Example--killer dowel pin---have you had the cover off ?? Say seal replacement??
Everyone wants to throw there chest out with the add-on's DOLLARS I've spent to inpress some one? NOTE -i spent mine to extend the useful life of the veh--and comfort,. IF, I repeat IF,you want to know what to look out for ,and keep cost down and not jump off the end of the earth it takes "experance" OR having say 30 veh in your drive and checking one to the other, over many miles--OR
being a member of SAY - TDR. /website instant referance IF every one included this info in there bi-o. But most of the members won't own there current veh 5 years from now. . ???or hit say 200k??
As for the example--KILLER DOWEL PIN- I have my current miles and know others with 94's & 95's and around 500k + and we all are still alive, are we just lucky???
Cummins may have bo-bo'ed OR someone else?? LET's look at the history of the failed units THEN everyone has a leg to stand on. . Guestion ?should i start mine sunday eve????????????????/

There's somebody on here who uses his 96 as a hot-shot... and finally had to put in a water pump at 600,000 miles! (his first repair). 5th gear nut problems can occur before or after 100k. There are a very few with rear axle seal failures, a couple 4x4's with bad track bar bushings and that's about it. The dowel pin issue has only reared its ugly head in the last couple weeks... not sure what that's all about yet. Enjoy!

The odometer on mine reads 199645 now. I just had to replace the transmission because of the input shaft. It got hot and the teeth ground off and into the gears. I was using Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 and had 42K on the oil. I've got people checking on the cause now. Fifth gear went three times. Track bar has just been changed. I would not trade this truck for two new ones.
Good truck with a better engine. I don't know about the engines on the OTR trucks but this Cummins is by far the best engine I've have ever had. I started driving at 16 and am now 57. A lot of miles.

135k on my 2500. Only engine related problem besides a mystery stalling twice has been the throttle cable and overflow valve. I expect to hit 500k with little work on the engine now that my dowel pin is jigged fixed. The dowel problem is real, of the 8 trucks I jigged fixed one was almost ready to fall out, a '97.

Bill:
What exactly what do you do to the housing with the jig for the pin? I must have a probable problem with a 96. Sounds like I need to look into the cure.
Thanks

To track a reason for a failure you have to look at what was done it the area that may have caused /or not the problem. .
If the cover has never been apart THEN and only then can one yell fire. (CUMMINS) fault.
T. T. sorry to hear about your in put failure, being i dont use anything but Syntec-Not the approved lube can i be just bless with out a failure?? My records and wife know better.
If you want to know how to cure the 5 th gear failure and i will tell you how to do it,as i have th relayed my fix to the head eng'r ,relayed results to STD. Trans And if you want to spend more $$$ Or read the TDR issue that related to the rebuild the cure is hidden in there,AND it is not an extended splined shaft--OR they wouldnt be doing a cetrin step>

Definately, it would be hard to challenge your record on the Syntec & the "theoretical" negative results that "supposedly" could/should happen.

I 4 1 would definately like to hear your opinion on the 5th gear fix...
