Watch the M38s

I have looked into getting a Mil spec rig several times and have heard one thing repeataly... . The M38s are considered Unsafe for the road and are made undrivable "After" sale. What I've heard done is: remove the engine, radiator, transmission and TCase, cut the frame, mangle the body... all sorts of nasty stuff. There was one report of a guy who bid on auction, won and had to sit there and watch the destroy his beauty, and then he had to get it off the lot! I also read on a site that the military was forced by AMG to do the same thing to any mil spec Hummers. However, through some loophole, the USMC is occasionally able to sell them, but no one else? Thank you Congress!

There are plenty of websites and organizations out there for mil spec trucks. There are even some companies that specialize in Mil spec trucks, two that flow into my diesel-foggerd brain are; www.boyceequipment.com and www.see-seco.com Good luck.

P. S. My dream is, a 2. 5 or 5 ton frame and axles, a BOMBed 8. 3 Cummins (12valve) Allison transmission, and the cab of a dodge mated to the stock front clip, with big ol' honken 47inch tires :D

BigUgly, are you sure it's not the M151's (Ford Mutt) you're referring to as only sold cut up? I've never heard of the Jeeps being cut apart.

Bill, I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was the Jeep (M38). The theory behind this is that these vehicles are ehum... "Designed for use only by trained military personel, and Civilins are too stupid to know that a Jeep may tip over if you treat it like a Corvette" Or something like that... .
