Millennial & Gen X TYPES

When in Indianapolis IN this week we went to dinner at Coopers Hawk, a fairly nice restaurant that Penny is a member of the wine club, We ate & bought a few bottles of wine for home.

Just after we were served the power went out not much of a problem they had candles on the table anyway. When finished the waitress that was one of the two mentioned above (I believe she was a Millennial) brought the bill.
I may not be the brightest bulb in the pack but I can count to twenty one if I take off my shoes (yes the fake leg has toes carved in) and pull down my drawers. I gave her a $100.00 & 3 $20.00 to pay for the dinner and the wine.
It took her 4 times to get the change correct.

Her excuse when she noticed how P Oed I was that the machine thing-ie that figures out what to give in change doesn't work without power. I told her the 3rd time what the bill would be but yet it took her another try before she got it right. When we were leaving she came running up and asked about the tip that I DIDN'T LEAVE!!

I offered a Tip " Get a Frigging Brain" she asked what she was supposed to do the power was out?

My suggestion of Being smarter than the machine wasn't understood by her but 90% of the patrons laughed.
She asked how I figured out the bill without any paper to do my "Doodling" on. That Doodling is called MATH!! I can add & subtract and even do percentages IF I WERE GOING TO LEAVE A TIP so simple addition would be good enough.

This is what's going to attempt to become a responsible adult SOME DAY?

Good Lord we're in Deep Trouble!!!

For a minute there Big, I thought you your watching this season of Survivor. :-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf

I've been Pondering the meaning of this reply until Penny brought our lunch to the Computer/ Photography room where I had been editing pictures & asked her what the Hell this meant? being as I don't watch much TV except for documentaries & the food channel I didn't understand. I remember trying to watch that show once or twice until I figured out it was a game show not a Survivalist type learning Channel. :D

You ought to try to run a business and have to hire some of these. The interview process can be quite entertaining. I hired one, one time and she had been with us for a couple of months, she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer by any means but she was sharp enough to use so I thought. Fast forward to Friday afternoon about an hour from closing time and a patient called with a problem with their oxygen equipment, she took a message and never mentioned it to anyone. Needless to say when patient called me at home Friday night late and I had to deal with the issue then she had to find a new job. She told me on Monday when being let go she didn't think oxygen was and emergency!

Government run education system.
I make it a point to make my kids, 11/16 do the math for a the tip. To know what the change should be well in advance of receiving it from the waitress.
it's a struggle for sure as i have very little patience for stupidity.

Hmm, if she's a border line millennial/gen x'er, that means you can probably thank her baby boomer parents for the upbringing

Yep, I ordered some spicy hot chicken with red beans and rice, I told cashier? that i wanted a couple of extra biscuits, her reply, " I can't sell extra biscuits ". If it's not worded on one of the register keys it is a no sale.and heaven forbid if the power is out. bg

JR what you said is NOT IN QUESTION!!

We also have two that fit someplace in the Generations we're talking about. We were fortunate enough to give our children more than what I had been given as a kid. Penny on the other hand is the youngest of her Tribe and even she says was spoiled beyond words.
I was the Billy Bad XXX of the family and made them work for what they received, I in a round about way paid for the USC & UCLA Educations with being a Combat Wounded Vet, Calif. gave the Children a Tuition free education to any school in Calif.
That's not to say that EVERYTHING was free. The books and all the associated BS that goes along with enrolment in classes had to be paid for, ever buy a book for A CLASS ?

Being the Billy Bad XXX I said that they needed to get a part time job to pay for the OTHER THINGS they both worked at Guasti Regional Park in Rancho Cucamonga to earn the money for the OTHER things.

I gave them a car because being given one by my Parents I felt that would be OK, they weren't new cars my Son had a 67 VW that he and I rebuilt from the pan up. This gave him some knowledge of what end of a wrench to use and why and if something should break he has some idea of how to get the thing home. My Daughter was a little different, I gave her my Nissan cab and a half Hardbody. that was in really great shape. I didn't like the idea of her having car problems in Calif. there are lots on Nasty folks that would love to take advantage of that.

I received free gas cards for doing my job without any problems Monthly, Go figure do your job get paid an obscene amount of money for driving a truck and get monthly gas cards and year end bouns for the same reason only not screwing up for entire year:eek:
I gave the Children enough gas cards so they didn't have to pay anything for that, the average yearly amount of FREE gas cards was in the neighborhood of $15,000 a year so they DIDN'T GET ALL OF THAT!! I rode a Cannondale Bike to work as Did Penny but we rarely paid for gas.

So you say that the Baby Boomers are sort of the blame for making their offspring MORONS. I say that your correct PARTLY!! amongst our friends we were thought to be Cruel, Terrible Parents. Our children have gone on to do very well in their lives, their friends are far from being on their own and having a family and lives that they are happy with. Some of their friends hope to start new lives as soon as they are Paroled or their Sentence is completed.

Our Children went to Eisenhower High School they were 2 of 15 in the entire school population that were considered to be White so we can put to rest that they went to a Charter School or some other form of GIFTED education IT WAS A PUBLIC EDUCATION and they made the best of it, to put in a different light when the went to apply for USC & UCLA their SAT Scores were NOT ANY PROBLEM.

I feel the difference was that ours Children had parents that cared about them. They had responsibilities that WERE GOING TO BE MET or EVERYTHING would be GONE!! and at 18 their XXX would be OUT THE DOOR. I really don't assume any responsibility for any of this I worked a tremendous amount of hours to keep Penny's & My dreams alive to retire before the Lid was Nailed Shut on my Coffin, Penny was they Planner, Scheduler, cook, house cleaner, Councilor & Referee.

WHAT THIS ALL BOILS DOWN TO IS THAT WE CARED!!!

Let the Fights begin

BIG

No fight here.
My only daughter is autistic. She goes to a "regular" class for ALL of her subjects. She gets additional one on one for math. She could read (REALLY read, not just small words) before she spoke sentences, other subjects are OK. Math is not great, however she's doing extremely well with multiplication......for some reason.
Yea, she probably wont grow up to be a rocket scientist (she's 9 years old, so who knows...) but I'm doing my best to assure she can do her math and know the basics at least.
The problem is the school likes to send home flyers saying "Be involved....join the PTA" etc etc etc. In reality they DON'T WANT YOU THERE!
The wife and I have been uninvited more than once.

That was the point of my comment BIG. While generations (and especially media) have an influence among their peers I feel it is more about the way they are raised then anything. I'm at the tail end of the gen x crowd and have an 11 year old and a 13 year old, and you can bet your favorite pair of shorts they know about respect and discipline. They've lived it since day one. We love them and they know it, but they also know there's no such thing as a free lunch in this world.

The thing that ABSOLUTELY TIES MY NUTS IN A KNOT is the OVER pronounced words'

Ahhhhhhhhhh mazing

Baaaaaaaaa utiful

Had a girl come into the feed store and give me the Ahhhhhhh mazing statement on the bag of feed she was buying. I could have slapped her so hard it would have shortened the word Amazing LIKE ITS SUPPOSE TO BE!!!

every generation has its slang words we had Boss, *****in, Groovy TRUST ME I NEVER SAID THAT KIND OF XXXX.

My MIL only made it to the 4th grade before she went to work to help the family. After she married my FIL she got a job in the fabric Dept of a local 5 and dime. She retired from there after 30 years. She handled all her families finances. At 93 her check book was never off a penny. She could add 4 digit figures in her head faster than I could punch a calculator. I attribute all this to a job with a tape measure and a pencil cutting fabric and writing up sales. No calculators involved when she retired in the early 70s. Just your noodle. You learn quickly and well when your job depends on it.

Big, Guasti regional park is looking real good as of date, and it's being expanded, I believe to the west side of Archibald. However I've never been there, thought about doing some cat fishing there, but just haven't yet. Thanks for reminding me of it, I'll take my daughter in the near future. BTW, she's a good apple of the X-Gen.

Having been born in 1980, I've never really been able sort out whether I'm an X or Millennial, but I can't recall any time I've ever been terribly concerned about it either. Reading what you dealt with though certainly made me a bit ill because that kind of thing is almost a weekly occurrence for my wife and I. If neither of us knew exactly what change we are supposed to get back in any transaction...I don't even want to imagine how much we would lose over the course of a month or year.

I wanted to have to sympathy for the server you mentioned, but four attempts and having the gall to complain about the tip, wow! My last retail job was 20 years ago. I never had difficulty figuring the total plus tax and the change in my mind when needed, say for power outages, but found that going through the motions of using a calculator in front of the customers kept the lines moving as they were more confident of the calculations.

The one thing that I could never seem to get right was counting back change. Its not that I didn't know how, it was that there are apparently a few different manners of doing so and every now and again someone would call me out for using the "wrong" method. It became such a guessing game of trying to figure out which customers would expect it to be counted back, and then trying to guess what method those that did expect it counted back would want that I eventually just stopped altogether and would just state the total amount of change.

I've been fortunate enough to have Never worked a retail job in the sense that people come to me to buy things that im selling, Until recently with the start up of our feed store even then we gave it to our Daughter to run as she sees fit.

I have a Samsung S6 the thought of it having a calculator available didn't enter my mind. I grew up in an age like some on this site that we didn't even have hand held calculators much less phones with them on it and able to access the internet sitting in the airport sending a picture of a race car to this site. Call me old fashion but I think that this technology filled world is the problem with it, sitting in the airport I watched people and was giggling about EVERYONE had some sort of device with their face stuck on the screen, an older man must have seen me and we started to talk. We concluded that technology & the Media are to two things that are F ing up this country, The two of them are linked so closely that Trump cant even brake wind and its on the phone before its stink get passed his skivvies.

There was a family of 5 on our flight prior to departure we noticed that all 5 had a cell phone texting we also wondered if they were texting to one an other because one of the children received a text and sat up and yelled at another of them. People have lost the ability to start and hold a conversation.

We went to get a coffee at Starbucks he made the comment when I ordered mine that it sounded as if I had said that a few times, NOT ALL TECHNOLOGY is bad I guess :-laf
