I have a ss Mini 14 182 series with no scope mounts, but with an ATI Strikeforce stock with a rail that starts just past the chamber. What have I got to do to kill coyotes at up to 125 yards? Aimpoint, Trijicon, long relief scope, offset scope mount? Best ammo? Any hints or good links on getting these varmints? Although I've had this rifle for years, I havn't done any serious shooting with it. You ought to hear 'em when the train horn blows!! Mark

Just Hit it! Go to the range if you consistently put the rounds into a 5-6" group at 100yds you will be just fine.

Coyote Soup

Coyote Hind quarter

cooking oil

2 cups red wine

3 onions, chopped

1 garlic clove

salt and pepper

spices

2 cabbage heads, chopped

8 potates, chopped

Cut meat into chunks and brown in oil. Add wine, onions, garlic, salt and pepper and your other favorite spices. Cook for 30 minutes. Add cabbage and potatoes. Cook until tender. Serve with hot biscuits or corn bread.

Start with a tracer so you can see what correction you need to make.

If 'yotes see red, have a cohort up higher shine a laser pointer in the general area to keep the 'yote's attention on something near-by. Maybe even entice the 'yote to approach closer. "Come a little bit closer, you're my kind of 'yote. Come a little bit closer, you're too small and too quick. ... "

fest3er, if you're down my way, please come by and serenade my varmints!! Thanks for the good heehaw! That was pretty good! Mark

That's pretty funny.

My personal opinion, practice with the 14, open sights or long eye relief scope, you should be able to hit a coyote at 125 yards, easily, as long as the rifle will shoot fairly well. Lighted dot reticles(aimpoint, trijicon, Barska) work well, too, but I prefer scopes, and I often shoot a great deal beyond 125 yards with a . 223 round. The 55 grain Hornady v-max has claimed several dozen coyotes this year out of my ar-15, so I see no reason why your Ruger wouldn't either. I've killed 4 with it in the last 60 days, and 6 hogs. Two 'coons also managed to jump in front of bullets this month. I really like the . 223 round for low recoil, but decent performance.

And I love to call predators in with rabbit and woodpecker calls. It's so hard to sit and wait on them to see how close you can get them in. And when you call in several at a time, it's all craziness when you let the first round fly!!

Having had a little experience w/ a mini14, I would suggest trading it for a AR-15. My SKS will out shoot dads mini14 any day, but you cant beat the black rifle with the HBAR. Put a nice scope on it and spank coyotes.

mine had so much whip that it climbed completely off the paper at 100 yards after the first few rounds.

+1000 on calling, that's the most fun hunting I've ever had!

You likely have a 1 in 10 inch twist barrel.

Pretty much any decent quality 3-9 power or higher scope will be good for optics. You can almost never go wrong with a Leupold. Even the cheaper brands such as Burris, Tasco, and others will do for 125 yards.

With your barrel twist rate, I think a Hornady 50 or 55 grain Vmax would be ideal.

Prvi Partizan makes really good cheap ammo that shoots very well and accurate.

The 75 grainers will do OK out to a 100 yards in your rifle but likely will not stabilize and tumble past that range with a 1 in 10 inch barrel twist rate.

The 55 grain soft points will be in the sweet spot and they are very explosive on impact out to about 300 yards in my 22-250. Past that, the bullet has slowed down to much. I can still hit a gallon milk jug of water at 400 meters with these bullets very consistently.

You will also need an electronic call. Foxpro seems to be at the top of the line but you can get cheaper models that work pretty good.

The Mini 14 is not the most accurate rifle without a fair amount of accurzing work being done to it. Usually good enough to keep the rounds in a 6 inch circle at 125 yards. Different Mini rifles vary, some better, some worse.

I have hit coyotes at about 350 yards with my Mini 14 Ranch Rifle but shots at that range are very difficult and require a bench rest or bipod.

If you reload, you are gonna hate the Mini 14 because it throws brass all over the place and as far as 75 feet away. Makes it very difficult to find after firing.

The Mini 14 is a good defensive firearm and does OK for hunting. I finally got tired of the crappy accuracy and loosing half of my brass and bought a Savage Model 12 Varmint Low Profile in 22-250 with a 1 in 9 inch twist barrel.

If you cant hit a coyote at 125 yds get a new gun or learn to shoot scope or not:eek:

Agreed--a good peep sight is all that's necessary at 125 yards.

Get good with a standard military peep sight and the Tacticool crowd with their Aimpoints and Trijicons will be in awe of you.
