You can't - we turned off avatars about a year and a half ago to help with speed for dial up users as well as to reduce bandwidth usage.

Not in the foreseeable future. The amount of bandwidth used went down by over 20% when they were turned off. We had an overwhelmingly positive response from our dial up users on the improvement in speed they got at that time. I do my best to make sure that pages are as small as possible to keep speed up especially for those dial up users. It doesn't seem like the avatars would add that much but they can nearly double the size of a page in the forums.

Steve, would it not be possible to store the type of connection in the cookie stored on our computers. Then upon download of a thread, the cookie would determine if avatars are to be sent to the users' computer.



Or possibly better, store that info in the user profile that is already stored on TDRs' servers. and then download if user wants?
