I call this a "minor BOMB" because it only helps a little, but hey - the factory backup lights can use all the help they can get.

When I replaced the backup light bulb in my wife's truck today, I got to pondering that the 3157 is a dual-filament bulb, interchangable with the tail/brake light bulb. Out of curiosity, I tested to see what happens in reverse, and only one of the two filaments gets lit.

The 3157 is a flat, or "spade" shaped bulb where it plugs in. The contacts for each of the two filaments are diagonally opposite each other on the spade. Looking inside the socket, I noted which side the contacts were touching, which happen to be for the larger (brake) filament. I then carefully bent the tail light wires on the bulb over to the same side so that both filaments come on together. If you want to do this, just pop the bulb out and look at it - you won't have any trouble figuring out what I mean.

When you see both filaments on at the same time, the tail light filament doesn't look like much, but if it adds candles back there, I'll take it. I have the White Knights rig too, but there's never enough, especially backing up a horsetrailer in the dark!

BTW, this mod works regardless of which torque converter you prefer, so let's not have any :-{} about that! ;)

By lighting both filaments though you will be using more power therefore after doing all the correct calculations I dervied that you will lose approximately 2. 3675 hp. I would tend to thinks long and hard before doing this mod. Also wont' this put more strain on the lifter pump therefore making it go bad quicker then your VP44 will have to work harder at getting the proper fuel so it too will give out sooner. Will the stock clutch hold this kinda of wattage!? And last but not least, will I have to upgrade the wiring harness the accomodate this new found light source. LOL!!! :D

You guys bring up some great points. So now I'm really tuned in to my truck and I'm noticing some anomolies.

First, I'm getting two PSI more out of my turbo. But only in reverse - go figure. I can't see why this is unless it's because I tapped the hot lead to my fuel pump to power those other accessory backup lights. Took me awhile to find this out. When was the last time you saw 37 PSI when backing up?

Second, when I'm backing up, the stereo's not as loud and the CD player spins slower, which makes Garth Brooks sound a lot more like me. He's got friends in REAL low places now.

And last, if I'm using my cellphone, all I have to do is throw 'er in reverse and the RFI causes my phone to convert to Any Time Minutes, and whoever I'm talking to suddenly sounds like Jamie Lee Curtis.

If I find out anything else, I'll let you know right away.

Let's not forget warrantee considerations! If the dealer catches you, you won't have a warrantee! You better get an extra set of bulbs and keep them unBOMBed for dealer visits. :p
