Does anyone know about the interchangeabilty of mirrors between the newer heated power mirrors and the older power mirrors on our 12 valvers? I Figure I would have to run a switched wire for heating, but are they a bolt on, and is the wiring a nightmare?

94-02 all mirrors will bolt on I am pretty sure, but I don't know about the wire-harness and what not. I'm sure you might have to add a push-button type switch, maybe a toggle switch, whatever you want, to run the defroster. I'd think the power harness would hook right up, but who knows.

I installed a set of 98 pwr/heated mirrors on the wife's '95. Yes they bolt right up, but the wire colors don't match up. There are still 4 wires that run the mirror motors, and I had to spend a few minutes on each door switching the wires until I found the right combination.

The heated harness has it's own connector with two black wires in each door, and seems easy enough to hook up. I swore I was going to get the the heaters hooked up before winter time, but never got around to it.

Yes, the 98+ mirrors bolt up to the 97- doors.

Not sure on the old style, but the 98+ mirrors use connectors by Yazaki. I have not located a source for the mating connectors. Manual mirror operation is OK as I'm the only driver. I really could use some heat on those frosty mornings.

John,

What I did was cut off the connectors from both mirrors, played with the wiring while using a wiring schematic, then I soldered and shrink wrapped the 95's connector/pigtails to the 98 mirror so it would plug into the 95's harness.

Thanks for all the tips, if I can justify spending the money for the mirrors I will change them over. I have noticed that several people have them for sale in the classifieds. Thanks again.

I did exactly what MikeR did, put '98 mirrors on a '97. I bought them from an L. A. TDR member who replaced his mirrors with Powervisions. I added a toggle switch to my switch panel (a piece of 2" X 2" angle aluminum mounted on the lower edge of the dash, ahead of the transfer case lever) for the heaters. I have a pair of Painless Wiring "Cirkit Boss" auxiliary fuse boxes, so I used a space on one of them for my power source, using a 10 amp fuse. I also wired up an amber indicator light. Never had a problem with this set up.

If you want to take it one step further, check out the replacement heated mirror glass with the built-in LED turn signals from Muth . I put these on my truck. It was a simple matter of tapping into the turn signal wiring on the steering column. I did this at the same time I installed the mirrors, so I didn't have to go back in there and monkey around with the wiring a second time.

Mr Hemi-- I got a pair from my 01-- make me an offer----- I put a pair of X mounts so mine are taking up space- it would make my wife soOo.

xmount

Dabubba,

How do you like the xmounts??. I did not know about them when I upgraded(or down graded) to the new plastic accessory 7X10 towing mirror that dodge offers. The accessory "flip up towing" mirrors are not power and heated although they look cool. I hated to lose the electric/heat feature when I needed the towing mirrors. Have been thinking about getting the xmounts. Have seen them in this months Trailer Life. They seem rather large but I have not seen any pictures of the mirror on the truck from a little distance. I have only seen pictures where they show you the mirror on the door, not the entire truck. Can you send a pic???.

Also, the new 2002 Rams have the Accessory style mirror with power and heat but the mounts are different and can't be put on the 2001. I would have to extensively modify the 2002 mirrors to fit my mounts and that is a lot of work and money. I think the xmounts are about $400.

Thanks

Way to go DC!

Hope you lose a lot of accessory sales to the aftermarket manufacturers... (see sig. )

MrFixit- I :D about those X mounts- yes they make my truck look like it has "dumbo" ears- but it makes backing solo (or ignoring the mrs. ) easier- plus at speed it gives a vortex affect to my smokeOo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Installation is KISS (keep it simple-stupid) so even a mechanically challanged person (like me:--) ) did it in a couple of hours (and cold beverages) with my mentor looking on- Trailer life has a story on them this month and thier phone number ect---
