After reading Issue 38 cover to cover and seeing EarthRoamer was having rattling problems with the drivers side mirror, I realised I am also having this problem, and I have seen a number of other TDR members with this problem. Dodge says it's because we installed "aftermarket" bug deflectors which changes the aerodynamics of the truck, causing the drivers mirror to shake to the point it's almost useless. I'm just wondering, can Dodge or someone give me an answer as to why the passenger mirror DOESN"T shake with the same aerodynamic changes?

Thanks for the reply. Please note the date I posted this question(11-18-02). I was just wondering if any one else noticed this... ( the mirror problem, not the long response time) VERY good answer, Thanks.

The reason the passenger mirror doesn't SEEM to vibrate is because of the convex profile of the mirror. If you have a spot mirror on your driver side mirror you'll notice that it doesn't seem to vibrate either. The motorcycle industry has used a very slight amount of convex in their mirrors for quite a while do do away with "buzzing" mirrors. That's why the cheap aftermarket mirrors for bikes SEEM to vibrate more, they use flat glass.

When I bought my first truck in '95 I got one of the Dodge bug deflectors. I noticed my mirrors shaking. The next year when my friend bought his '96 he bought the very same Dodge bug deflector and I noticed they had redesigned it. He didn't have the shake... then I read the TSB about it.

My truck is a '97 and I didn't put the bug deflector on until June '98. My concern isn't the shaking mirror, it's why the right side mirror DOESN'T shake with the same aerodynamics shaking the drivers side mirror.

Have you tried to ck. the torq. on the fasters (three nuts) that retain the mirror to the door.

Just remove the screw at the upper corner of the door post gently hold it back remove the insulation foam pad w needle nose pliers , o-ring pick etc. I think the torq. is 30 IN. lbs, re-ck. my figures w your FSM.

An assistant can hold the door panel out of your way while you sneak the 3/8 dr torq, wrench in the hole.

I've seen the finder tight.

My other thoughts are that the pivot mech. inside the mirror are worn more or not as tight as the rs mirror, which could also cause vibration.

Need commentary on the analogy given about the m/c mirrors. Guess I won't go aftermarket on the dual sport next time. .

Good luck

Andy
