Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Another Decent trip

Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Finally filled a bear tag in Ca

Hey all

Just wanted to relate to you a story where I was all set to take my big 36' 5ver to LA and have a time in Disneyland and Beaches and 5th Anniversary with my wife... . Well on the week before, I developed Fever, 101-102 all that week and on the day we were supposed to leave, I had difficulty standing and talking when sitting up. . had gotten up to 103+ temp. . went to ER and through tests and such gotten a rare disorder called Guillain-Barre (Barret like the the hat). . this is where the white platelets attack the Peripheral Nerves so you lose muscle control and such... Even breathing... it eats away at the lining of the nerves and makes them not function well.

Well I went down hill a bit from there. . got on an airway, Catheter and transferred to the university of Utah Hospital in the Neuro Critical Care Unit There is a treatment for the disorder by IV a medicine that blocks the Platelets from attacking... After that I started to come around. . on the 8th day i got off airway, by the 12th day I was starting to walk with help. . on the 13th I was transferred to the rehab level and was walking better by the 18th. . Left the Hospital on the 19th day. .

I had an MRI on the 12th and it said along with the Guillan-Barre, I had a mild Left side stroke and a Bickerstaff Brain stem Esephilitis . . Which the latter means my brainstem swelled up a bit and that has screwed up my eyes a bit. . The GB and has attacked my inner ear nerve so I am a little dizzy and my eyes don't track left and right very well and I have double vision. . My right eye puts the same image just to the right or left of my right as they are not synced yet. . so I am on Short term Disibility, my truck is sitting in the drive with 87 gal of Diesel on board and I cant drive it... grrr. .

but I am doing good now,, my strength is ok but my stamina needs work. . the docs say that nerves regenerate at a rate of 1mm/Day so this will be a slow process. . doing rehab to help stamina and balance. Man what an experience!! wouldn't wish it on anybody. . the one silver lining in all this is I have always had borderline high BP. and in the hospital, they found a combination of 3 pills that work well to keep it around 120 or less. . perfect. . so that is good. .

Boy,you never can tell. I've got a number of chronic issues, but your situation dwarfs mine.

I get occular migraines and double vision frequently and it sure puts the world in another light.

Best of luck for a complete recovery!

EricBu12,
We dont drive the same truck, but my heart goes out to you!
Glad you are getting better and maintaining communication with the outside world!
Thats a load of physical burdens to bear! I will place you on my Prayer list! The LORD is aware of your situation.
Even before HE is asked! But we need to ASK!
Hope you recover, quickly!

Guillan-Barre

Careful with that one. Its not one to be fulled with. I used to know a guy that had it He "self medicated". He finally feel down and broke his neck, but didnt go to the hospital for almost a week. He never recovered. But it was the "self medication" that really killed him.

hope for a speedy recovery..... take care... I also have been sick for the last several weeks, with my crohns..... really puts me in the dumps... . but on the up swing... take care You were lucky, and were at good ca hospital... . that might have made a huge difference in your outcome... . I go to cedars Sinai... they are great, and traveled several times back and forth to do a surgery, and it was flawless, and how well they set everything up... staying here in vegas would for sure have been more of a pain in the butt... . it was worth the 4 hr drive for sure... hands down

So what was the problem you should have taken the wife and went camping (just kidding) take care of yourself your the only one of you there is. :D I have heard about that problem on TV with all the commercials that say you should take this for this and that for that. I wondered what it was. Some times the cure is worse than the problems but in this case guess not ;)

EAT HEALTHY, EXERSICE , STAY HEALTHY ,JMO

I dont think there is an actual cure. You hope to go into remission and learn to live with it.

I wish you all the luck you can get. Listen to the doctors and take what they say very seriously.

All there is for treatment for it, is. . IVIG. . it is something call imun-iglobolin. Thats how it sounds. . dont know how to spell it... it blocks the platelets from attacking the nerves. . once that was done, i started to recover. . doing physical therapy now to get my stamina back. . muscles are not bad. . still have double vision but it seems that is slowly getting better

Any idea of how you contracted this? Im a GERM-A-PHOBE I dont really like going to hospitals because why else would someone go to them THEIR SICK for the most part. It sounds strange (maybe not coming from me) but PEOPLE ARE DISCUSTING CREATURES. My Son when he worked as a fireman/Paramedic told me some stories that just made me sick about how people live in the house that could be RIGHT NEXT DOOR ya just dont know.

My only credential here is that I had a friend that had it. I think they used to say you might get it from a swine flu shot. But I think they decided that didnt do it. My friend seemed to think he got it some how when on a cruise thru the panama canal in the early 90's. Ive heard that FDR might have had it.

I dont think you'll get it from going to a hospital. Is it not contagious.

HOLLY CRAP BUD!!!!!!!!!! Did some reading on this you better go to Church and do some thank you's ,thats some bad A** I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER your one lucky Pard by the sounds of it.

Big, I'm with you on nasty hospitals and homes (worked for the phone company for about 4 years). My dad always said people die in hospitals, he was right, he did. I know several horror stories about hospital screw-ups and diseases contracted while in one. Eric, hope you get back to "normal" soon. Sounds like it was a close one. Enjoy life to the fullest.

Eric,

Hoping that you have a speedy and complete recovery.

My accountant/tax man had G-B this past fall while he was in Florida at his summer home. Went from perfectly normal with a slight fever to bed ridden on a ventilator in 24 hours.

His wife is a nurse and she flipped out on the staff at the hospital down there and got them moving. A good thing that she did as it turned out.

I saw him on March and he is 99% recovered. He said it was an eye-opening experience... .....

Mwilson,

A humbling experience for sure. . I had a head cold and then a fever for 5 days. . not bad. . 101-102. . then went downhill. . Very glad I was only in the hospital 18 days. . Did your friend have problems with his eyes? I have double vision. . was told by my doctor when he had GB his took 6 months to clear up. .

The University of Utah Hospital is one of the top 5 in the nation... Has the Huntsman Cancer institute there and Neurology clinics. . Everyone in the hospital is very accommodating and knowledgeable and everything is very clean. . Didn't once think about a concern for illness contamination. .

Eric, I can't recall if he had vision issues. The whole thing surprised me so much that I just can't remember.

I will e-mail him when I get back home next week as I don't have the address with me.

Hey all,

Getting better. My balance is coming back. . I am doing some physical therapy my energy is getting better. . Just need my eyes to come back on line to see singular. . Have double vision still. . Opthamologists say it will take a long time as nerves take 1mm. day to regen. . it's the 6th optic nerve that is the problem mostly. . both eyes won't go to the outside (left to left and right to right). So I have another appt. in January. . WOW. . gonna be a while. . Keep ya'll updated. . PS. I have an eyepatch on and I drive my Dodge to the store from time to time. . no freeways. .

Eric,

That's terrible news for a relatively young man who is still working. I wish you all the good fortune and success you'll need to recover fully.

We are very lucky to live in a time when the quality of medical care in America is outstanding. However, doctors and nurses are human and do make occasional mistakes. We must remain involved and have our family members involved on a daily basis to oversee the care we receive. It sounds like you are fully informed and staying on top of it so that is good.
