Went to watch my Father-In-Law race one of my old cars at the track tonight (since my race car is still under construction... . again) and figured I take the HO down the 1/8mile and see what she'd do. Well, first pass was a total burnout cause the tires were still too wet (35/12. 50/17 A/T's). 2nd pass hooked much better but wheel hopped bad and shimmied and shaked the whole truck. But then, just before the finish line I went to hit 5th, and hit REVERSE... . OUCH!! It didn't go totally in, but made some AWFUL screeches.

So, I'm wanting to change the fluid the 6spd now and wonder what fluid is best for it? I'm also wondering if the PTO filter kit from Geno's is good, and if it'll work with the "Fast Coolers" also from Geno's? What would you guys do?

I'm definately gonna add the BD short shift kit before I decide to take it down the strip again!!!

Used the filter kit on the y2k and it cleaned the fluid nicely and got the "debris" out of the tran. Fluid looked gud on the bad one cause it did its job. I think that with the fast coolers you would only use the drivers side because the splashing of the fluid to the filter would not work. The fast cooler would not let the fluid get into the slot (too far away from the "splashing" effect).

If you get the fast coolers and the filter, post the passengers side for sale or put it on the "Paid Forward" thread.

Just another 0. 015$ opinion.

OK, I'll probably just skip purchasing the fast coolers... . I never tow that much weight anyway, thus don't really need the extra cooling... . I just wanted the extra capacity. I will get the filter kit since you said it works good, and the fact that I like to hit reverse at 60mph (lots of brass?) Also, I'm gonna order the short shift kit.

Now, what kind of oil do I use in the transmission? Is it MTL, or is it engine grade 5w-30 or something? ATF? 80w-90? I've seen all of these in different manual trannies!

I'll probably go synthetic, what kind?

They're in stock. I received mine last week but haven't installed it yet.

I run Redline MTL in my 6 speed and like it. I am going to order the filter kit for it also. There is a possible group purchase going on TDR for the short shifter kit where you might save some $$$. Check it out.

What I didnt say, in the above post is, that the trans went about 450-500 miles before I could get it worked on and the oil was "reuseable" if you went by clean but it was a little "burnt" (3rd gear on the fiver went).

Also, if anyone has a side cover plate, would like to do a "trade" (I'll pay postage both ways) I would like to get the bung for a temp gauge welded in and then when I gets about 20-25k on it, change the fluid, add the filter kit and the temp probe. Want to put it on the drivers side and not have a lotta down time. If anyone has put the fast coolers on, need to know a location for the temp probe so it doesnt hit gears or ?? on the drivers side. I figure about 1 -1. 5" above the center bolt on the bottom, is this a gud location? E-mail or PM me.

TIA

Now you tell me! Oh, well, $170 isn't so bad if it works as advertised. I'll know later on this week. Any '03 users out there using the extended coffee mug holders?

Use the lube you want, but NV and Dodge only recommends the Dodge lube. Several members have recommended using Duck butter and they say it makes shifting real smooth.

Duck Butter??

How much lube does the transmission take... . any difference with the filter kit installed?

Just want to know how many quarts I should buy.

Thanks!

NV5600 holds 9. 5 pts I don't know about the filter kit but I would doubt if it would expand the cap. Plus you will have to buy 10 pts. so you will have an extra 1/2 pt. hope this helps.

Give the short shifter a few hundred shifts to loosen up. It's a bit stiff after installation.

OK, so I need 10 pts of MTL. Either Dodge stuff or Redline.

I installed the short shifter kit yesterday. When I removed the old shifter there was a ton of brass flakes all over it! Ouch! Gotta get that lube changed and the filter kit on it!

Yes, the short shifter is a hell of a lot stiffer. Has anyone tried removing some of the factory shims to loosen it? I just installed it per instructions and left all of the shims in place.

I think it's because the parts (bbot, etc. ) are moving in different places now. The factory shift was stiff too when I bought it. It should loosen up as time goes by.
