When my engine is cold I get a miss at 2000 rpm and smoke out of the tailpipe. When the engine is up to operating temperature it runs great. The intake heaters seem to work (the voltage fluctuates during the post heat cycle) and this happens even when the ambient air temperature is warm (80 deg F). This problem started about 800 miles ago. Could my timing have slipped? I doubt this, but I have not checked it (I do not have the dial indicator for the pump. Is there anyone in the Houston-Bryan College Station-or surrounding area with the tools to do this?). Perhaps a sticking injector? One thing that is different is where I have been buying my fuel. In fact, this problem seems to have started since I have been buying fuel at a Shell station in Houston. Previously I have been buying it at an Exxon in College Station. The water in fuel light does not come on. Could this be the problem?

All of the trucks I have owned will do the same thing you are describing.

When cold most diesels wont obtain full RPM, miss , cough and smoke.

Just let it get to operating temp. or at least a little temp. and it will be fine.

I'm gonna have to agree that timing sounds like the problem, but it is possible that the fuel could be part of the problem. Is this happening over several tankfulls of fuel or just on one tank that came from one station?

PM or email me off-line if you want a hand with your timing, I'm in Sealy and have a brother-in-law at A&M.
