01 24 valve 5 speed with adrenaline and airdog. I have a miss and sounds like an engine knock all happend on my way home today. I was thinking maybe injectors? I have plenty of fuel pressure and a new VP44 with about 20k on it. My truck will miss at all rpm ranges (varies) and at the light will rev up for a second and back down to normal 800-900 rpm. Anyone know what will cause this? My injectors have 238k miles on them... . so i was guessing maybe those are going out? Please help! I have a 10k trailer to tow in 2 weeks and need my baby back!

Also the rpm gauge was dropping to zero like it was doing when my cam sensor went out. But when my cam sensor went out it was just missing, not knocking like this. It sounds like its coming from the middle of the engine???

Check oil level and see if it's high. May have a fuel leak at the inj tube or such. This may also cause the miss = not enough fuel going into combustion chamber + piston not being under pressure due to no fire causing knock. But, it may be something else. Start by checking the oil level if its high . . .

If you can't tackle this job and need the truck quickly try a Cummins repair shop, they love playing with our "little" toys, it's a brake in the routine for them.

Good luck.

Oil level stays the same. I check it before i drive it and when i get home. It hasnt moved at all. I got a new cam sensor today and changed it but still have the miss. The knock is gone but i have a miss. It seems like when i push in the clutch i can get it to miss every time. The rpm gauge will go to 0 and back up to 900 rpm. It will barley move when it misses but randomly will go to 0 and back to 900 on its own. Other than that, its random. Not sure where to go from here, any help is greatly appreciated!

Bought a code scanner today. Got 1690. Since i just replaced the cam sensor with a new one, does that mean my VP44 is going? I just put it in a few thousand miles ago but it was used from the classifieds. Airdog pumped 16psi consistently. If it is my VP44 im just going to buy a new one this time with a warranty. Will a bad VP44 cause a miss and the rpm gauge to go wack?

Crack the injector lines loose one at a time

To see if the knock quits. Sounds like a bad injector,if this is the case its not safe to drive.

I agree it sounds like a injector problem. I had a injector hold down bolt that was a little loose and the injector backed out of the bore a little. Caused a heck of a knock almost like a rod.

Some of the 01's did have Crank position sensors. Given you said you lost your tach completly to zero i would look above the starter and see if there is a CKS sensor and if so i would consider replaceing. It is doubtfull it is the the CKS if you are getting misses constantly but it almost sounds electrical to me, chances are you do not have the CKS but worth looking into.

Just in case you didn't know what the code 1690 is - the 24v code list describes the following:

"P1690 (M) Fuel Injection Pump CKP Sensor

Does Not Agree With ECM CKP

Sensor

Problem in fuel sync signal. Possible injection pump

timing problem. Low power, engine derated, or engine

stops. "

here's a link to the code list - save to your favorites.

Since you now have a scan code reader try clearing the code and see if it comes back.

Cleared the code a few times and i did not find a crank sensor. I let it run yesterday for about 10 min and there is no knock just missing/stumble and the tach goes crazy. Think i may buy 1 more cam sensor and if it doesnt work i guess my VP44 is the problem? I need to do something to get my truck back on the road. I really hate to bring it to the dealer... . Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Took it in to a local diesel mechanic and he said its a bad ecm. His computer will not even talk to the ecm and said he has had this problem before and ecm fixed it. My question is, where is a good place to get a ecm besides the dealer? I see em on ebay for $600 but read a few other forums where that company has sent ecms that worked for 3 hrs and had to send it back for warranty...
Thanks for the help!!!

JCurry,

I presume you mean Auto Computer Exchange?

I've purchase both an ECM and PCM from them without a problem.

Their quality and performance is hit and miss for sure, but as long as you buy an ECM through eBay, you at least have eBay on your side if something goes wrong. Take note that Auto Computer Exchange has a great feedback rating on eBay and they seems to do a lot of business. Their eBay feedback rating suggests they care more about maintaining their reputation and account status on eBay, but not so much outside of eBay. They have a solid "F" on the BBB web site for over 50 unanswered complaints in the last 36 months.

Whatever you do, don't get suckered into dealing with them directly where you'll have no protection. Transact only through eBay even if you have to talk to them to them on the phone to clarify something about the order.

Good luck,

John L.
