New truck reliability..unbelievable!

Wow - what a fantastic Model B-29

Howdy all,
<O:p</O:p
I’m working on the engine in my Ram D 50 1984 dodge. It currently has me over a barrel and I was hoping someone here has experience with it and the Diesel Kiki pump that is on it. It’s a 2. 3 liter 4D55T Mitsubishi engine; I bought the truck not running.
PO</ST1:p said it went bang while driving down the road and died, never to restart. I got it home and checked out the oil and water levels, both were fine. <ST1:pPO</ST1:p had replaced a head gasket on it I thought there might be a possibility that the timing belt had slipped time. Pulled the covers and it all checked out. I put a fresh battery in it and after a minute of cranking and some either it was running, rough but running. I bled the injections lines while running to remove any air and noticed number one cylinder didn’t affect the RPM as much as the other three cylinders. I swapped number one and two injectors but it had no effect on the cutout test. At this point the engine would start on it’s own after about five seconds of the glow plugs on a forty degree day.

I reassembled the remaining components and took the truck for a drive. It ran out well for a small engine and the little bit of white smoke cleared up as well. The engine was running smoother than it had and idling well. Took it for another two mile trip and all was well. I shut it off in the driveway and immediately tried to restart with no luck. The engine just spins over not trying to fire at all. It won’t start cold or hot now, or with glow plugs or either. I suspect the fuel rack has hung up in the pump but I have no clue as to were it is or how to get it freed up. Can some one give me some pointers? It’s a Diesel Kiki rotary 4 cylinder pump with electronic fuel shutoff. \

Part two,

I’ve located the plunger/solenoid but I don’t want to tear the pump apart with out any clue of what I’m doing. I had the very same thing happen on my Roosa Master pump on my 4320 and it took about five minutes to fix it. I haven’t had any luck finding a manual for the engine other than the vague Chilton Manual I currently have. I have a compression tester on order to try to figure out if number one hole had an issue and if the engine is worth repairing. But, I started the engine 15 -20 times before the test drive and it always fired up without much issue and for it to just suddenly not start I think it has to be a small issue within the pump. I’ve replaced the timing belt thinking maybe the stretch of the old one may have been an issue but it didn’t affect a thing.

Sorry to be long winded but I could really use some help with this thing.

Thanks,

After some research this turns out to be a Bosch VE pump manufactured under license by Diesel Kiki. Any one have experience with the VE?

I used to own a Mitsubishi SPX. Guess what year and engine..... I will go to my storage facility later today and look for the manual. Once got 36 mpg on a road trip.

My engine was running strong in '88 when I traded the truck. The only problem I had was the the brain on the right kick panel got a little water in it from a winshield leak. Disconnected it, and put in a switch to make the glow plugs work.

The VE pump was used on the first gen Dodge's 89-93 so theres a lot of knowledge in the first gen forum on that. Also most of the repowers/conversions using The 4B Cummins have the VE pump. Maybe you should post this under the general Diesel forum?

Thanks Steve, I'll give that a try. I used to come here a lot but after they changed it a year or so ago I haven't been in it.

So what do you want to know? I have recently overhauled one of these little pickups and it appears it could be one of several problems. The loud pop bas me a little confused and maybe unrelated to your current problem. I would recommend starting with first things first like glow plugs and a compression check. Also you starting issues maybe related to the fuel cut soleniod or the glow plug solenoid. If you are not getting fuel or it's not being heated you may have problems starting. You may have possibly burned up the glow plugs. These little motors were fitted with a super fast acting glow plug. This means that the glow plug are at full resistance in 3 seconds. If you turn the key to run a let it sit for 3 seconds you should hear the glow plug relay click in the engine compartment. You should then start the moter immediately after you hear relay click. If you do not hear a click then your relay maybe the issue. As far as you pump goes it is a Bosch VE part # MD086188. It is similar to Kiki diesel pump but they are not the same. The Kiki pump was only used for the 1983 model year and the Bosch VE pump was used on the 1984-1985 model years. Lastly the part off of an '83 4d55t are not interchangable with the 1984-1985 4d55t model years. Good luck, I hope this helped.

Thanks for the info Spencer, just the sort of stuff I was after.

The super quick system had been defeated with a switch mounted in the cab to operate the system manually. They have also done something to the alternator light as well because it doesn't come on when you first turn the key on. I know that the alt charging disarms the glow plugs or at least changes the rate. I will check all the glow plugs first.

I just received a manual for the engine today I hope to do more trouble shooting in the next few days. I had ordered a compression tester and it took 14 days to get here, when I opened the box it was a welding magnet not a comp tester! #@$%! #@$%! #@$%!

Will a VE pump work on this engine if I find one for a 4 cylinder?

In theory a four cylinder pump should work if the pully is the same, the fuel pressure is the same, and it bolts up and wires to the 4D55. If you ask me, that is too many variables. Also the reason your engine isn't firing up maybe that your glow plugs are burned up. This is a very common problem for people who have bypassed the glow plug relay. The reason they burn up is that people let the glow plug heat up too long. These are patented fast-acting glow plugs which were 20 years ahead of their time. It only takes 5 seconds for these plugs to reach 2000 degrees. Anthing more than 5 second will result in damage to the plugs. The trucks original relay prevents glow plug activation of more than 5 seconds. Instead of finding a new pump your best bet is getting the pump rebuilt professionally. You will need the number off the lower drivers side of the pump. It should read something like "pump number 104640-3010 or pump number 104640-3310". The make should say Diesel Kiki but it also says Bosch. So your guess is as good as mine. But if it means anything Mitsubishi says it is a Bosch in their brochures. Good luck and if you have any question feel free to email me. spencevans@cc. usu. edu

It was fairly common on the old 6. 2 GM's to put "slower" glow plugs (less resistance) in when you wired the switch in, that way, you had to hold the switch for around 30 seconds or more depending on how cold it was. Not sure if anything like that was available for the mitsubishi's... or if the people who installed the switch installed those. But you should be able to check easily with a test light to see if they are burned out. Hook the clamp to 12v, then unhook the wire going to the glow plug, then touch the terminal where the wire was hooked, if the test light lights up, it's good!

It's possible to install a different injection pump, just make sure the bolt pattern, shaft diameter and shaft length are the same. We put a 2. 5L VM diesel in our jeep, and it came with an electronic pump, we put a pump on it off of a VW, (Bosch) and it runs great.

Sorry for being so long winded.
