2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Mixing motor oils

My father wanted me to ask you guys if he made a mistake when he mixed different oils during his last oil change this past weekend.



He has a 2001 with less than 9,000 miles, this was his 3rd oil change. He uses Delo 400. He thought he had enough for the change, but came up short. He ran over to Wal-Mart, where he gets the Delo, and they were out, so he's checking around and finds Mobil Delvac 1300 super motor oil. He says according to what he read on the bottle, Delvac 1300 meets the requirement of the new API CI-4 service catagory, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF, SJ.



He now has 8 qrts of Delo and 3 qrts of Delvac 1300. Any chance he is going to run into problems?

In fact, I changed brands not to long ago, I was using Delo 400 and change to Devlac 1300 super also.

While it's not recomended to mix two different brands of oil I doubt if he'll have a problem.

If you have to mix, just make sure the viscousities are the same.

Your Pop will be fine, while there is a slight chance of an additive package clash it is VERY unlikely. There is a high probability that Chevron and Mobil buy the additives for the oil from the same suppliers and that the packages are very similar. I have done it with Rotella and Delo with no problems.



Tell Dad to change the oil at 7500 miles whether it needs it or not IMO.

Additive clash is a real issue which can and does shorten the useful life of the oil. I don't know if I would run it out to 7500 maybe 3000-5000, but I don't think he will cause any harm by having done this. I wouldn't make a habit of it, but I'm sure he doesn't intend to.



Personally I would drop it all and start over, but I am just a little too anal sometimes

Personally, I would not do this. But he should be fine as long as the viscosities are the same. I would change it soon, but mostly out being too much of a perfectionist.

Should be fine even if the viscosities are not the same.

The truck is ruined, if it is still drivable, you should park it at my house and leave me the keys. This will save your father the expense of having to have it towed to the land fill.
