Just a friendly warning to my TDR brethren and ... (sistren??)

I greased the front end of my 99 4x4 with Mobil-1 grease this week. This grease (or the carrier) had a chemical reaction to the Mopar stuff that was in there and CAUSED IT TO LIQUIFY.

That's right, ALL the grease turned to liquid (about the consistancy of ATF) and ran out, dripping all over my driveway and leaving the tierods dry.

I'm sure Mobil-1 is a good grease, just don't combine it with the OEM stuff unless you're willing to keep greasing every day for a few days to completely clean out the old stuff.

This can probably happen with other brand-combinations of grease too. It wouldn't hurt to double-check those grease fittings a day or so after you re-grease to see if it's running out thinner than it went in.

Sure glad I noticed it when I did!!!!!!

Thanks for the warning! I have a tube of that
stuff in my garage. I haven't lubed my Ram
yet, as it only has 5,500 miles so far. #ad

I used to use the Mobil 1 but found that just by sitting on the shelf the stuff would start to seperate, I even had to wrap a rag around the grease gun because it would drip red liquid all over. Some of the stores I went to buy it at said they quit carrying it because of the mess it sometimes made on the shelves from weeping, I switched to Chevron red heavy duty, mess gone #ad

Its not a hobby anymore, its an addiction!

I ended up switching to Valvoline synthetic. It seems to be heavier / stiffer (more like non-synthetic) than the Mobil-1.

I'm on a regiment of re-lubing every day or two until I get rid of all the red slurry. What a mess!

Kyle,
Much depends on the type of thickener in grease for compatibility purposes. If the Mobile 1 grease had a Lithium Complex for example, and the OEM grease was a Calcium thickener, the two would NOT BE COMPATIBLE, and would certainly do as you state. Fluid seperation is the first sign of incompatibility. When changing to a different grease with different thickeners, it is best too purge out the old grease.

Hope this helps,

Wayne

Amsoilman,
Although you are right when you say it's best to purge out all the old grease, and I agree with that. I must correct you on the incompatability of Lithium Complex and Calcium grease. A Lithium Complex is compatable with all the Calcium greases (Calcium, Calcium 12-Hydroxy, and Calcium Complex) Lithium Complex is also compatable with Aluminum Complex, Lithium, and Lithium 12-hydroxy.

The LE lithium Complex is compatable with most other greases and is available from Mag-Hytec at 1-818-786-8325.

The LE grease was designed for exceptional mechanical stability, excellent extreme pressure and high temperature capabilities, and super impact resistance. It can be used on chassis, wheel bearings (even with disc brakes), front axle arrangements, U-joints, general industry, marine, fleet, bucket pins, farm and wherever high temperatures, water or heavy loading are considerations.

The LE grease has the ALMASOL additive that the LE 607 gear oil has, and it also has QUINPLEX. QUINPLEX gives protection in shock loadings by causing grease to cling tightly to metal surfaces and it won't sling off. A special Lithium Complex base and QUINPLEX, ensure through coupling of oil and grease base so that the oil has a no bleed (won't run out of the tube or any other application).

Sincerely, Kevin

I think I missed that day of chemistry.

I've been real happy with Amsoil grease, except for the (non greasable) track bar, all my front end parts are good and tite at 87K
