Mobil 1 Truck & SUV - NOT CI4 PLUS rated---still ok to us???

I have done several searches and have not found a viable answer... . I am thinking about switching to MOBIL 1 TRUCK & SUV 0w40 synthetic... I am currently using Delvac 15w40 dino oil and have 12,500 miles on the truck.



I thought the newest classification CI4+ was for the soot created by the EGR valves on the 2004. 5 and later Cummins...



The Mobil 1 is rates at CI4, but not CI4+..... also, Delvac 1 0w40 is CI4+... .



Some folks say they have emailed Mobil and were told that the oils are the same... others indicate that Mobil told them that they are different... .



I would probably use the Delvac 1 but can't find it anywhere... .



The questions, I guess, is how important is the CI4+ rating for the 2004 or 2005 Cummins (or even the 2006)??? :confused: :confused: :confused:

What EGR valves? Yeah, I'm a 2nd genner, but the last I heard, Cummins wasn't using EGR on the HPCR 5. 9L... ... ... yet, at least.

You're right Rusty. CI4+ was really created for Ford and other diesels that use EGR. Cummins does not use EGR (yet).



DHerzog I believe it is safe to use.
 
I guess I AM confused... . I was sure the 2004. 5 came with egr valves and that's why the oil gets so black in 500 miles after an oil change... .



Why did I think Cummins started using an egr valve??? So then, why is it that the oil gts so darn black in just a few hundred miles after and oil change???

I know that the change from CH to CI was due to emissions requirements for the oil. I ran CH a few times in my 04. 5 600CTD without issues.

Yup. Nick nailed it. It was speculated that Cummins would go to EGR to meet the emissions requirements but they figured out a way to meet emissions without EGR. Maybe that was where that thought came to you from?
 
My Truck is a 2004. 5 Ram 350 5. 9..... What other oils is out there that can be safely used... My truck has 48,000 miles...

You may want to go to a website entitled "bob is the oil guy.com" & look at the "Light Diesel Engine Oil" forum. This is a free website but, you will have to register, to use it. No big deal.



I've spent a lot of time over there & when you boil things down, Chevron Delo-400 15X40, CI-4+ is rated very highly, for a conventional oil. The new "plus" rating has a healthy dose of moly & boron, which, is supposed to be a great additive. Some think that the differences between synthetics & the new CI-4+ conventionals has lessened, quite a bit.



On the synthetic side, the Mobil Delvac 1 &, possibly Mobil 1-Truck & SUV, seem to be the most popular & well thought of. The jury still seems to be out on weather the MD-1 & M1-T&SUV are the same thing, MD-1 being more expensive.

MD-1 is rated as CI-4+ & M1-T&SUV is CI-4. There is a lot of guessing as to what Mobil is actually doing, here.



I think the bottom line is that if you a good name brand, fleet-rated motor oil, you should be just fine.



I remember reading in the TDR mag. about a guy & his wife that had 1,153,000 miles (yes that's million) on their 94 or 95 Dodge/Cummins, without an engine rebuild. It was still running fairly well & they used it as their back-up truck. They delivered trailers for a living, consequently the high miles. The nice thing about this story is that they documented all their miles and everything they did to the truck, including the frequency of oil changes. They changed it every 5000 miles using Shell Rotella 15X40 & Fleetguard filters.

Today, the oil quality has improved quite a bit. So, our engines should like it even more.
