I'm sure this horse is already good and dead, but I'm gonna beat it one last time...

Is it okay to run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic ATF in a 47re? And does it meet Mopar +3 and/or +4 ATF specs?

I've got a 98 12v with a 47re that's my ranch truck in the summer, and my snowplow truck in the winter. I live in Steamboat Springs, CO where we get an average 15ft of snow per year with a couple months of -30F cold snaps. So I work it hard pretty much every day in the winter.

I'm getting ready to change my transmission and transfer case fluids. I have more than enough leftover bottles of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF Multi-Vehicle Formula to do the change, so I'd like to use them. I've tried searching through some of the TDR forum archives and on Mobil's website, but I still haven't found any credible sources saying M1 -SATF does or doesn't meet Mopar +3 and/or +4 requirements for the 47re.

I think full synthetic ATF would really help it in the winter, and the price is right... What do y'all think?

I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic for around 60,000 miles with no problems. I called ATS about it years ago. They said it was unnecessary, but was fine to use. It does seem to find a way past the seals though.

ATF +4 is synthetic, its a great ATF and works best in the 47RE.

I think I'm running Orielly's ATF +4 now, I've used Valvoline and Mopar for years. My trans shop uses the Orielly's brand. Can't tell a difference in shift quality, its probably the same ATF with different labels. You can run dexron for harder shifting, my DTT 47RH was filled with dexron during break in by the shop. I liked ATF +4 shifting better, its firm enough with the DTT mods and ATF +4 is good stuff from what I've read.

Who built your trans? I'd ask them. I have a DTT, and when Mopar ATF+3 went away I asked them if I should use +4 and they said they prefer Dexron vs +4.

Dexron III shifts harder, DTT said I could run it to save money when I had it built back in 2007. I have the install notes with the extra hand written answeres. Maybe its changed since 2007? Thats when ATF +4 was Mopar only and a fairly expensive synthetic OEM fluid. Thats not the case for years now, ATF +4 is available at the average parts store in multiple brands.

With that said, Dexron was rough in my DTT 47RH, down right harsh 1-2 changes. They said add a bottle of some additive, after break in I just went back to ATF +4, shifts firm without the head snap. I change my ATF in the pan around 15K, so the generic pricing has really helped. My truck is pretty much a dedicated hauler and tow rig, its worked hard. Towing heavy, if I see over 200 in the pan for a while I'll drain the double deep pan. Trying to make this $5,000 trans last.
